A Call to Repentance (Joel 1:13–20; Amos 5:4–15; Luke 13:1–5)
1 ULT Gather yourselves together! Yes, gather, O nation not desired, BSB BSB: Gather yourselves, gather together, O shameful nation,
2 ULT before the bringing forth of the decree,{ before} the day passes like chaff, before the burning of the nose of Yahweh does not come upon you, before the day of the nose of Yahweh does not come upon you. BSB BSB: before the decree takes effect and the day passes like chaff, before the burning anger of the LORD comes upon you, before the Day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you.
3 ULT Seek Yahweh, all the humble of the earth who do his justice. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden on the day of the nose of Yahweh. BSB BSB: Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth who carry out His justice. Seek righteousness; seek humility. Perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD’s anger.
Judgment on the Philistines (Jeremiah 47:1–7)
4 ULT For Gaza will become abandoned, and Ashkelon a ruin. Ashdod, they will expel her at noon, and Ekron will be uprooted. BSB BSB: For Gaza will be abandoned, and Ashkelon left in ruins. Ashdod will be driven out at noon, and Ekron will be uprooted.
5 ULT Woe{ to} the inhabitants of the region of the sea, the nation of the Kerethites! The word of Yahweh{ is} against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines:“And I will destroy you until there is no inhabitant.” BSB BSB: Woe to the dwellers of the seacoast, O nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines: “I will destroy you, and no one will be left.”
6 ULT And the region of the sea will become pastures of meadows of shepherds and pens of flocks. BSB BSB: So the seacoast will become a land of pastures, with wells for shepherds and folds for sheep.
7 ULT And the region will be to the remnant of the house of Judah. They will shepherd upon them; in the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down in the evening, for Yahweh their God will visit them, and he will restore their fortune. BSB BSB: The coast will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; there they will find pasture. They will lie down in the evening among the houses of Ashkelon, for the LORD their God will attend to them and restore their captives.
Judgment on Moab and Ammon (Isaiah 16:1–14; Jeremiah 48:1–47)
8 ULT “I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the sons of Ammon, that they have reproached my people and made themselves great against their border. BSB BSB: “I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the Ammonites, who have taunted My people and threatened their borders.
9 ULT Therefore,{ as} I{ am} alive”— the declaration of Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel—“that Moab will become like Sodom, and the sons of Ammon like Gomorrah, a possession of the nettle and the pit of salt and a ruin forever. The remnant of my people will plunder them, and the remainder of my nation will occupy them.” BSB BSB: Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, “surely Moab will be like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah—a place of weeds and salt pits, a perpetual wasteland. The remnant of My people will plunder them; the remainder of My nation will dispossess them.”
10 ULT This will be to them instead of their pride, for they reproached and made themselves great against the people of Yahweh of Armies. BSB BSB: This they shall have in return for their pride, for taunting and mocking the people of the LORD of Hosts.
11 ULT Yahweh{ will be} fearsome against them, for he will starve all of the gods of the earth. And all of the islands of the nations will bow down to him, a man from his place. BSB BSB: The LORD will be terrifying to them when He starves all the gods of the earth. Then the nations of every shore will bow in worship to Him, each in its own place.
Judgment on Cush and Assyria 12 ULT “Also you, Cushites, they{ will be} pierced by my sword.” BSB BSB: “You too, O Cushites, will be slain by My sword.”
13 ULT And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and he will destroy Assyria. And he will make Nineveh a ruin, a dry place like the desert. BSB BSB: And He will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria; He will make Nineveh a desolation, as dry as a desert.
14 ULT And herds will lie down in its midst, every animal of the nation. Both the desert owl and the screech owl will lodge on its columns. A call will hoot in the window; devastation{ will be} in the threshold, for the cedar- work will be bare. BSB BSB: Herds will lie down in her midst, creatures of every kind. Both the desert owl and screech owl will roost atop her pillars. Their calls will sound from the window, but desolation will lie on the threshold, for He will expose the beams of cedar.
15 ULT This{ is} the exultant city, the one dwelling in security, the one saying in its heart,“I{ am}, and besides me{ there is} not another.” How it has become a ruin, a lair for the beast! Every one passing by will hiss at it; he will shake his fist. BSB BSB: This carefree city that dwells securely, that thinks to herself: “I am it, and there is none besides me,” what a ruin she has become, a resting place for beasts. Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.
