BOOK V Thanksgiving for Deliverance (Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 8:22–25)
UST Thank Yahweh because he is good and because he faithfully loves us forever! BSB BSB: Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
UST Those whom Yahweh has saved should tell others that he has rescued them from their enemies. BSB BSB: Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy
UST He has gathered them together from{ many foreign} lands; he has gathered them from the east and the west, from the north and from the{ southern} sea. BSB BSB: and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
UST Some of those who returned from those countries wandered in the trackless desert; they could find no town to live in. BSB BSB: Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell.
UST They were hungry and thirsty, and they became weak and discouraged. BSB BSB: They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them.
UST Then because they were distressed, they called out to Yahweh, and he rescued them from what was distressing them. BSB BSB: Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
UST He led them along a straight road where they walked{ safely} to cities where they could live. BSB BSB: He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live.
UST They should praise Yahweh for how he has loved them faithfully and for the wonderful things that he does for all people! BSB BSB: Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
UST They should thank him because he satisfies people who are thirsty, and he gives hungry people plenty of good food to eat. BSB BSB: For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
UST Some of them sat in deep darkness; they were prisoners, suffering in iron{ chains fastened to their hands and feet}. BSB BSB: Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains,
UST They were suffering in prison because they had rebelled against God; they actually rejected the instructions that the Most High God gave to them. BSB BSB: because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
UST God made them experience difficult things so that they would no longer be proud. When bad things happened to them, there was no one who would help them. BSB BSB: He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
UST Then because they were so distressed, they called out to Yahweh, and he rescued them from what was distressing them. BSB BSB: Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
UST He broke the chains that were on their hands and feet and brought them out of those very dark prisons. BSB BSB: He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains.
UST Yahweh broke down the bronze gates and he cut through the iron bars of their prison. Therefore they should praise Yahweh for how he has loved them faithfully and for the wonderful things that he does for all people! BSB BSB: Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
UST Some of them foolishly rebelled{ against God}, and they suffered because of their sins. BSB BSB: Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.
UST They did not want to eat any food, and they almost died. BSB BSB: They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.
UST Then because they were so distressed, they called out to Yahweh, and he rescued them from what was distressing them. BSB BSB: Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
UST Then Yahweh healed them by speaking a message of healing; in this way he saved them from dying. BSB BSB: He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.
UST They should praise Yahweh for how he has loved them faithfully and for the wonderful things that he does for all people! BSB BSB: Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
UST They should give offerings to him to show that they are thankful, and they should tell about the miracles that he has performed by singing joyfully! BSB BSB: Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing.
UST Some of them sailed in ships; they bought and sold things far away across the sea. BSB BSB: Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters.
UST These people saw the creatures that Yahweh created; they saw the amazing things that he had made{ as they traveled} across the very deep seas. BSB BSB: They saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.
UST Then he commanded the winds to become strong. They became a storm and stirred up very high waves. BSB BSB: For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted the waves of the sea.
UST The ships in which they were sailing went up on the high waves, then they went down into the troughs between the waves. This dangerous action terrified the sailors. BSB BSB: They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths; their courage melted in their anguish.
UST They stumbled about and staggered as drunken men do, and everything that they tried to do was useless. BSB BSB: They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.
UST Then because they were distressed, they called out to Yahweh, and he rescued them from what was distressing them. BSB BSB: Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
UST He calmed the storm and he stilled the waves. BSB BSB: He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
UST Then they were very glad that the storm had become calm and Yahweh brought them{ safely} into the harbor where they had wanted to go. BSB BSB: They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.
UST They should praise Yahweh for how he has loved them faithfully and for the wonderful things that he does for all people! BSB BSB: Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
UST They should praise him among the Israelite people when they have gathered together, and they should praise him in front of the leaders of the community. BSB BSB: Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
UST Yahweh causes rivers to become dry so that the land becomes barren, and he makes springs of water to become dusty ground. BSB BSB: He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground,
UST Yahweh causes land that normally produces a lot of crops to become salty wastelands. He does that because the people who live there are very wicked. BSB BSB: and fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers.
UST But Yahweh also creates pools of water in deserts, that is, he causes springs to flow where the ground had been dry. BSB BSB: He turns a desert into pools of water and a dry land into flowing springs.
UST Then he brings people who are hungry into that land, to live there and to build cities there. BSB BSB: He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell.
UST Then they sow{ some of} the fields with seeds and{ in other fields} they plant grapevines and it all produces{ a large amount of} crops. BSB BSB: They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
UST He blesses those people so that they have very many children, and so that their herds of cattle become very large. BSB BSB: He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.
UST Then the people become fewer because the leaders oppress them and cause them to become distressed and to suffer. BSB BSB: When they are decreased and humbled by oppression, evil, and sorrow,
UST Then Yahweh shows that he despises the leaders{ who oppress them}, and makes those leaders wander in a wilderness where there are no roads. BSB BSB: He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
UST But he rescues poor people from those who oppress them and causes{ their} families to increase in number as flocks of sheep do. BSB BSB: But He lifts the needy from affliction and increases their families like flocks.
UST People who live rightly see{ Yahweh do these things}, and they rejoice; wicked people{ know about these things, too,}{ but they} have nothing to say in reply. BSB BSB: The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.
UST Those who are wise should think carefully about these things; they should thoughtfully consider all the things that Yahweh has done to show that he faithfully loves them. BSB BSB: Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.
