Numbers 31 (LXX)

1ΚΑΙ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων·And the LORD said to Moses,

2ἐκδίκει τὴν ἐκδίκησιν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ τῶν Μαδιανιτῶν, καὶ ἔσχατον προστεθήσῃ πρὸς τὸν λαόν σου.“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”

3καὶ ἐλάλησε Μωυσῆς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγων· ἐξοπλίσατε ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνδρας καὶ παρατάξασθε ἔναντι Κυρίου ἐπὶ Μαδιὰν ἀποδοῦναι ἐκδίκησιν παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου τῇ Μαδιάν·So Moses told the people, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and execute the LORD’s vengeance on them.

4χιλίους ἐκ φυλῆς, χιλίους ἐκ φυλῆς, ἐκ πασῶν φυλῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἀποστείλατε παρατάξασθαι.Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel.”

5καὶ ἐξηρίθμησαν ἐκ τῶν χιλιάδων Ἰσραὴλ χιλίους ἐκ φυλῆς, δώδεκα χιλιάδας ἐνωπλισμένοι εἰς παράταξιν.So a thousand men were recruited from each tribe of Israel—twelve thousand armed for war.

6καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς Μωυσῆς χιλίους ἐκ φυλῆς, χιλίους ἐκ φυλῆς σὺν δυνάμει αὐτῶν καὶ Φινεὲς υἱὸν Ἐλεάζαρ υἱοῦ Ἀαρὼν τοῦ ἱερέως, καὶ τὰ σκεύη τὰ ἅγια καὶ αἱ σάλπιγγες τῶν σημασιῶν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν.And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

7καὶ παρετάξαντο ἐπὶ Μαδιάν, καθὰ ἐνετείλατο Κύριος Μωυσῇ, καὶ ἀπέκτειναν πᾶν ἀρσενικόν·Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

8καὶ τοὺς βασιλεῖς Μαδιὰν ἀπέκτειναν ἅμα τοῖς τραυματίαις αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸν Εὐὶν καὶ τὸν Ροκὸν καὶ τὸν Σοὺρ καὶ τὸν Οὒρ καὶ τὸν Ροβόκ, πέντε βασιλεῖς Μαδιάν· καὶ τὸν Βαλαὰμ υἱὸν Βεὼρ ἀπέκτειναν ἐν ρομφαίᾳ σὺν τοῖς τραυματίαις αὐτῶν.Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

9καὶ ἐπρονόμευσαν τὰς γυναῖκας Μαδιὰν καὶ τὴν ἀποσκευὴν αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔγκτητα αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν δύναμιν αὐτῶν ἐπρονόμευσαν·The Israelites captured the Midianite women and their children, and they plundered all their herds, flocks, and goods.

10καὶ πάσας τὰς πόλεις αὐτῶν τὰς ἐν ταῖς κατοικίαις αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς ἐπαύλεις αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησαν ἐν πυρί.Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,

11καὶ ἔλαβον πᾶσαν τὴν προνομὴν αὐτῶν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκῦλα αὐτῶν ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνουςand carried away all the plunder and spoils, both people and animals.

12καὶ ἤγαγον πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ πρὸς Ἐλεάζαρ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ πρὸς πάντας υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν καὶ τὰ σκῦλα καὶ τὴν προνομὴν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν εἰς Ἀραβὼθ Μωάβ, ἥ ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοῦ Ἰορδάνου κατὰ Ἱεριχώ.They brought the captives, spoils, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.

13Καὶ ἐξῆλθε Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἐλεάζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες τῆς συναγωγῆς εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῖς ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆς.And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.

14καὶ ὠργίσθη Μωυσῆς ἐπὶ τοῖς ἐπισκόποις τῆς δυνάμεως, χιλιάρχοις καὶ ἑκατοντάρχοις τοῖς ἐρχομένοις ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως τοῦ πολέμου,But Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.

15καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Μωυσῆς· ἱνατί ἐζωγρήσατε πᾶν θῆλυ;“Have you spared all the women?” he asked them.

16αὗται γὰρ ἦσαν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ τὸ ρῆμα Βαλαὰμ τοῦ ἀποστῆσαι καὶ ὑπεριδεῖν τὸ ρῆμα Κυρίου ἕνεκεν Φογώρ, καὶ ἐγένετο ἡ πληγὴ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ Κυρίου.“Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.

17καὶ νῦν ἀποκτείνατε πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ ἀπαρτίᾳ, πᾶσαν γυναῖκα, ἥτις ἔγνω κοίτην ἄρσενος, ἀποκτείνατε·So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,

18καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ἀπαρτίαν τῶν γυναικῶν, ἥτις οὐκ οἶδε κοίτην ἄρσενος, ζωγρήσατε αὐτάς.but spare for yourselves every girl who has never had relations with a man.

19καὶ ὑμεῖς παρεμβάλετε ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆς ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας· πᾶς ὁ ἀνελὼν καὶ ὁ ἁπτόμενος τοῦ τετρωμένου ἁγνισθήσεται τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ καὶ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ ὑμεῖς καὶ ἡ αἰχμαλωσία ὑμῶν·All of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to purify both yourselves and your captives.

20καὶ πᾶν περίβλημα καὶ πᾶν σκεῦος δερμάτινον καὶ πᾶσαν ἐργασίαν ἐξ αἰγείας καὶ πᾶν σκεῦος ξύλινον ἀφαγνιεῖτε.And purify every garment and leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”

21καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλεάζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας τῆς δυνάμεως τοὺς ἐρχομένους ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως τοῦ πολέμου· τοῦτο τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ νόμου, ὃ συνέταξε Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ.Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:

22πλὴν τοῦ χρυσίου καὶ τοῦ ἀργυρίου καὶ χαλκοῦ καὶ σιδήρου καὶ μολίβου καὶ κασσιτέρου,Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—

23πᾶν πρᾶγμα, ὃ διελεύσεται ἐν πυρί, καὶ καθαρισθήσεται, ἀλλ' ἢ τῷ ὕδατι τοῦ ἁγνισμοῦ ἁγνισθήσεται· καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐὰν μὴ διαπορεύηται διὰ πυρός, διελεύσεται δι' ὕδατος.everything that can withstand the fire—must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be purified with the water of purification. And everything that cannot withstand the fire must pass through the water.

24καὶ πλυνεῖσθε τὰ ἱμάτια τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ καὶ καθαρισθήσεσθε καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰσελεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν.On the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”

25Καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων·The LORD said to Moses,

26λάβε τὸ κεφάλαιον τῶν σκύλων τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους, σὺ καὶ Ἐλεάζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν πατριῶν τῆς συναγωγῆς,“You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.

27καὶ διελεῖτε τὰ σκῦλα ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν πολεμιστῶν τῶν ἐκπεπορευμένων εἰς τὴν παράταξιν, καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον πάσης συναγωγῆς.Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.

28καὶ ἀφελεῖτε τέλος Κυρίῳ παρὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων τῶν πολεμιστῶν τῶν ἐκπεπορευμένων εἰς τὴν παράταξιν μίαν ψυχὴν ἀπὸ πεντακοσίων, ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν βοῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ὄνων·Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, or sheep.

29καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους αὐτῶν λήψεσθε καὶ δώσεις Ἐλεάζαρ τῷ ἱερεῖ τὰς ἀπαρχὰς Κυρίου.Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD.

30καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους τοῦ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ λήψῃ ἕνα ἀπὸ πεντήκοντα ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν βοῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ὄνων καὶ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ δώσεις αὐτὰ τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς φυλάσσουσι τὰς φυλακὰς ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ Κυρίου.From the Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”

31καὶ ἐποίησε Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἐλεάζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς καθὰ συνέταξε Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ.So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses,

32καὶ ἐγενήθη τὸ πλεόνασμα τῆς προνομῆς, ὃ προενόμευσαν οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ πολεμισταὶ ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων, ἑξακόσιαι χιλιάδες καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα καὶ πέντε χιλιάδεςand this plunder remained from the spoils the soldiers had taken: 675,000 sheep,

33καὶ βόες δύο καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες72,000 cattle,

34καὶ ὄνοι μία καὶ ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες61,000 donkeys,

35καὶ ψυχαὶ ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ τῶν γυναικῶν, αἳ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν κοίτην ἀνδρός, πᾶσαι ψυχαὶ δύο καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες.and 32,000 women who had not slept with a man.

36καὶ ἐγενήθη τὸ ἡμίσευμα ἡ μερὶς τῶν ἐκπεπορευμένων εἰς τὸν πόλεμον ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τῶν προβάτων τριακόσιαι καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακισχίλια καὶ πεντακόσια.This was the half portion for those who had gone to war: 337,500 sheep,

37καὶ ἐγένετο τὸ τέλος Κυρίῳ ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων ἑξακόσιαι ἑβδομήκοντα πέντε·including a tribute to the LORD of 675,

38καὶ βόες ἓξ καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες, καὶ τὸ τέλος Κυρίῳ δύο καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα·36,000 cattle, including a tribute to the LORD of 72,

39καὶ ὄνοι τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι, καὶ τὸ τέλος Κυρίῳ εἷς καὶ ἑξήκοντα·30,500 donkeys, including a tribute to the LORD of 61,

40καὶ ψυχαὶ ἀνθρώπων ἑκκαίδεκα χιλιάδες, καὶ τὸ τέλος αὐτῶν Κυρίῳ δύο καὶ τριάκοντα ψυχαί.and 16,000 people, including a tribute to the LORD of 32.

41καὶ ἔδωκε Μωυσῆς τὸ τέλος Κυρίῳ τὸ ἀφαίρεμα τοῦ Θεοῦ Ἐλεάζαρ τῷ ἱερεῖ, καθὰ συνέταξε Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ.Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as an offering for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

42ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμισεύματος τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, οὓς διεῖλε Μωυσῆς ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν πολεμιστῶν.From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,

43καὶ ἐγένετο τὸ ἡμίσευμα ἀπὸ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἀπὸ τῶν προβάτων τριακόσιαι καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακισχίλια καὶ πεντακόσιαthis half belonged to the congregation: 337,500 sheep,

44καὶ βόες ἓξ καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες,36,000 cattle,

45ὄνοι τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι30,500 donkeys,

46καὶ ψυχαὶ ἀνθρώπων ἓξ καὶ δέκα χιλιάδες.and 16,000 people.

47καὶ ἔλαβε Μωυσῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμισεύματος τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ τὸ ἓν ἀπὸ τῶν πεντήκοντα, ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν κτηνῶν, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὰ τοῖς Λευίταις τοῖς φυλάσσουσι τὰς φυλακὰς τῆς σκηνῆς Κυρίου, ὃν τρόπον συνέταξε Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ.From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.

48Καὶ προσῆλθον πρὸς Μωυσῆν πάντες οἱ καθεσταμένοι εἰς τὰς χιλιαρχίας τῆς δυνάμεως, χιλίαρχοι καὶ ἑκατόνταρχοι, καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Μωυσῆν·Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses

49οἱ παῖδές σου εἰλήφασι τὸ κεφάλαιον τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν πολεμιστῶν τῶν παρ' ἡμῖν, καὶ οὐ διαπεφώνηκεν ἀπ' αὐτῶν οὐδὲ εἷς·and said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.

50καὶ προσενηνόχαμεν τὸ δῶρον Κυρίῳ, ἀνὴρ ὃ εὗρε σκεῦος χρυσοῦν καὶ χλιδῶνα καὶ ψέλλιον καὶ δακτύλιον καὶ περιδέξιον καὶ ἐμπλόκιον, ἐξιλάσασθαι περὶ ἡμῶν ἔναντι Κυρίου.So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”

51καὶ ἔλαβε Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἐλεάζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς τὸ χρυσίον παρ' αὐτῶν πᾶν σκεῦος εἰργασμένον·So Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold.

52καὶ ἐγένετο πᾶν τὸ χρυσίον τὸ ἀφαίρεμα, ὃ ἀφεῖλον Κυρίῳ, ἑκκαίδεκα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι καὶ πεντήκοντα σίκλοι παρὰ τῶν χιλιάρχων καὶ παρὰ τῶν ἑκατοντάρχων.All the gold that the commanders of thousands and of hundreds presented as an offering to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.

53καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ πολεμισταὶ ἐπρονόμευσαν ἕκαστος ἑαυτῷ.Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself.

54καὶ ἔλαβε Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἐλεάζαρ ὁ ἱερεὺς τὸ χρυσίον παρὰ τῶν χιλιάρχων καὶ παρὰ τῶν ἑκατοντάρχων καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτὰ εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου, μνημόσυνον τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἔναντι Κυρίου.And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
