1એમ થયું કે જયારે આપોલસ કરિંથમાં હતો, ત્યારે પાઉલ ઉપલા પ્રદેશમાં ફરીને એફેસસમાં આવ્યો, અને કેટલાક શિષ્યો તેને મળ્યા.While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the interior and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples

2તેણે તેઓને પૂછ્યું કે, ‘તમે વિશ્વાસ કર્યો ત્યારે શું પવિત્ર આત્મા પામ્યા? તેઓએ તેને કહ્યું કે, ના, પવિત્ર આત્મા છે એ અમે સાંભળ્યું પણ નથી.’”and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” “No,” they answered, “we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3પાઉલે પૂછ્યું કે, ‘ત્યારે તમે કોનું બાપ્તિસ્મા પામ્યા?’ અને તેઓએ કહ્યું કે, ‘યોહાનનું બાપ્તિસ્મા.’”“Into what, then, were you baptized?” Paul asked. “The baptism of John,” they replied.

4ત્યારે પાઉલે કહ્યું કે, યોહાને પશ્ચાતાપનું બાપ્તિસ્મા કર્યું ખરું, અને લોકોને કહ્યું કે, ‘મારી પાછળ જે આવે છે તેના પર એટલે ઈસુ પર તમારે વિશ્વાસ કરવો.’”Paul explained: “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

5તેઓએ એ સાંભળીને પ્રભુ ઈસુને નામે બાપ્તિસ્મા લીધું.On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

6જયારે પાઉલે તેઓ પર હાથ મૂક્યા ત્યારે પવિત્ર આત્મા તેઓ પર આવ્યો; તેઓ અન્ય ભાષાઓ બોલવા તથા પ્રબોધ કરવા લાગ્યા.And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

7તેઓ બધા મળીને બાર પુરુષ હતા.There were about twelve men in all.

8પછી ભક્તિસ્થાનમાં જઈને તેણે ત્રણ મહિના સુધી હિંમતથી ઈસુના વચનો કહ્યા, અને વાદવિવાદ કરીને ઈશ્વરના રાજ્ય વિષેની બાબતો સમજાવી.Then Paul went into the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.

9પણ કેટલાકે મનમાં કઠણ થઈને, તથા પ્રભુની વાતનો અનાદર કરીને, લોકોની આગળ એ માર્ગની નિંદા કરી, ત્યારે તેણે તેઓની પાસેથી જઈને શિષ્યોને જુદા પાડ્યા અને તે તુરાનસના સભાગૃહમાં રોજ ઉપદેશ આપતો રહ્યો.But when some of them stubbornly refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way, Paul took his disciples and left the synagogue to conduct daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

10બે વર્ષ સુધી એવું ચાલતું રહ્યું; તેથી આસિયામાં રહેનાર સર્વ યહૂદીઓએ, તથા ગ્રીકોએ પણ પ્રભુની વાત સાંભળી.This continued for two years, so that everyone who lived in the province of Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord.

11ઈશ્વરે પાઉલના હાથથી એવા અદ્દભુત ચમત્કારો કર્યા કે,God did extraordinary miracles through the hands of Paul,

12તેના વપરાયેલા રૂમાલો તથા વસ્ત્રો તેઓ માંદાઓની પાસે લાવીને સ્પર્શ કરાવતાં, એટલે તેઓના રોગ દૂર થતા, અને તેઓમાંથી અશુદ્ધ આત્માઓ નીકળી જતા હતા.so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and the diseases and evil spirits left them.

13પણ કેટલાક ભટકતા યહૂદી ભૂવા પણ અશુદ્ધ આત્મા વળગેલાઓ પર ઈસુનું નામ ઉચ્ચારીને કહેવા લાગ્યા કે, જે ઈસુને પાઉલ પ્રગટ કરે છે, તેમને નામે અમે હુકમ કરીએ છીએ કે ‘નીકળી જાઓ.’”Now there were some itinerant Jewish exorcists who tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits. They would say, “I command you by Jesus, whom Paul proclaims.”

14સ્કેવા નામે એક યહૂદી મુખ્ય યાજકના સાત દીકરા એ પ્રમાણે કરતા હતા.Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.

15પણ અશુદ્ધ આત્માએ ઉત્તર દેતાં કહ્યું કે, ‘ઈસુ વિષે હું જાણું છું, પાઉલને પણ હું ઓળખું છું, પણ તમે કોણ છો?’But one day the evil spirit responded, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”

16જે માણસમાં અશુદ્ધ આત્મા હતો તે તેઓમાંના બે જન પર કૂદી પડ્યો, બન્નેને હરાવીને તેઓ પર એવો જય પામ્યા કે તેઓ વસ્ત્રો વગરના ઉઘાડા તથા ઘાયલ થઈને તે ઘરમાંથી જતા રહ્યા.Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. The attack was so violent that they ran out of the house naked and wounded.

17એફેસસમાં જે યહૂદીઓ તથા ગ્રીકો રહેતા હતા તેઓ સર્વને એ વાત માલૂમ પડી, તે સર્વ ભય પામ્યા, અને પ્રભુ ઈસુનું નામ મહિમાવંત મનાયું.This became known to all the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, and fear came over all of them. So the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.

18વિશ્વાસી થયેલાઓમાંના ઘણાં આવ્યાં, અને પોતાનાં કૃત્યો કબૂલ કરીને કહી બતાવ્યાં.Many who had believed now came forward, confessing and disclosing their deeds.

19ઘણા જાદુગરોએ પોતાના પુસ્તકો ભેગાં કરીને સર્વના દેખતાં બાળી નાખ્યાં; તેઓની કિંમત ગણી જોતાં તે પચીસ હજાર રૂપિયા જેટલી થઈ.And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books and burned them in front of everyone. When the value of the books was calculated, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.

20એ રીતે પ્રભુની વાત પરાક્રમથી ફેલાઈ અને પ્રબળ થઈ.So the word of the Lord powerfully continued to spread and prevail.

21એ બનાવ પછી પાઉલે મકદોનિયા તથા અખાયામાં થઈને મનમાં યરુશાલેમ જવાનો નિશ્ચય કરીને કહ્યું કે, ‘ત્યાં ગયા પછી રોમમાં પણ મારે જવું જોઈએ.’”After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well.”

22તેણે પોતાને સહાય કરનારાઓમાંનાં બેને એટલે તિમોથી તથા એરાસ્તસને મકદોનિયામાં મોકલ્યા, અને પોતે કેટલાક દિવસ આસિયામાં રહ્યો.He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed for a time in the province of Asia.

23તે અરસામાં એ માર્ગ વિષે ઘણી ચળવળ ઊભી થઈ.About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.

24દેમેત્રિયસ નામે એક સોની હતો, જે આર્તેમિસના રૂપાના દેવસ્થાનો બનાવીને કારીગરોને ઘણું કામ અપાવતો હતો,It began with a silversmith named Demetrius who made silver shrines of Artemis, bringing much business to the craftsmen.

25તેણે તેઓને તથા એના જેવા બીજા કારીગરોને એકઠા કરીને કહ્યું કે, ‘ભાઈઓ, તમે જાણો છો કે આ ધંધાથી આપણને ઘણી કમાણી થાય છે.Demetrius assembled the craftsmen, along with the workmen in related trades. “Men,” he said, “you know that this business is our source of prosperity.

26અને તમે જુઓ છો અને સાંભળો છો તેમ, એકલા એફેસસમાં નહિ, પણ લગભગ આખા આસિયામાં, કે જે હાથથી બનાવેલા છે તે દેવો નથી, એવું સમજાવીને પાઉલે બહુ લોકોના મન ફેરવી નાખ્યા છે;And you can see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in nearly the whole province of Asia, this Paul has persuaded a great number of people to turn away. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all.

27તેથી આપણો આ વ્યવસાય વખોડવામાં આવે એવો ભય છે, એટલું જ નહિ, પણ આર્તેમિસ મહાદેવી જેને આખો આસિયા તથા જગત પૂજે છે, તેનું મંદિર તુચ્છ ગણાવાનો અને તેનો મહિમા નષ્ટ થવાનો સંભવ છે.There is danger not only that our business will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty deposed—she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.”

28એ સાંભળીને તેઓ ક્રોધે ભરાયા, અને બૂમ પાડીને કહેવા લાગ્યા કે, ‘એફેસીઓની આર્તેમિસની જય!’When the men heard this, they were enraged and began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

29આખા શહેરમાં એ ગડબડાટ પ્રસરી ગયો. ત્યારે તેઓ મકદોનિયાના ગાયસ તથા આરિસ્તાર્ખસ, જેઓ મુસાફરીમાં પાઉલના સાથીઓ હતા, તેઓને પકડીને બધા ભેગા મળીને શલ્યખંડમાં દોડી ગયા.Soon the whole city was in disarray. They rushed together into the theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia.

30જયારે પાઉલે લોકોની ભીડની અંદર જવા ઇચ્છા કરી, ત્યારે શિષ્યોએ તેને જવા દીધો નહિ.Paul wanted to go before the assembly, but the disciples would not allow him.

31આસિયાના મુખ્ય અધિકારીઓમાંના કેટલાક તેના મિત્ર હતા, તેઓએ પણ તેને કહેવડાવ્યું ‘તારે શલ્યખંડમાં જવાનું સાહસ કરવું નહિ.Even some of Paul’s friends who were officials of the province of Asia sent word to him, begging him not to venture into the theatre.

32તે વેળાએ કેટલાક આમ બૂમ પાડતા, અને બીજા કેટલાક તેમ બૂમ પાડતા હતા, કેમ કે સભામાં ગડબડ થઈ રહી હતી, અને પોતે શા માટે ભેગા થયા છે, એ તેઓમાંના કેટલાક જાણતા પણ ન હતા.Meanwhile the assembly was in turmoil. Some were shouting one thing and some another, and most of them did not even know why they were there.

33તેઓ યહૂદીઓ આલેકસાંદરને ભીડમાંથી બહાર ખેંચી કાઢીને તેને આગળ ધકેલતા હતા ત્યારે આલેકસાંદર હાથે ઇશારો કરીને લોકોને પ્રત્યુત્તર આપવા ચાહતો હતો.The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward to explain himself, and he motioned for silence so he could make his defense to the people.

34પણ તે યહૂદી છે, એ તેઓએ જાણ્યું, ત્યારે તેઓ સર્વએ આશરે બે કલાક સુધી એકસામટા અવાજે બૂમ પાડી કે, ‘એફેસીઓની આર્તેમિસની જય!’But when they realized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

35ત્યારે શહેરના નગરશેઠે લોકોને શાંત કરીને કહ્યું કે, ‘ઓ એફેસસના લોકો, કોણ નથી જાણતું કે એફેસીઓનું શહેર આર્તેમિસ મહાદેવીને તથા ઝૂસ પાસેથી પડેલી મૂર્તિને પૂજનારું છે?Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t everyone know that the city of Ephesus is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?

36એ વાતોની વિરુદ્ધ કોઈથી બોલી શકાય એમ નથી, માટે તમારે શાંત રહેવું જોઈએ, અને કંઈ અયોગ્ય કૃત્ય કરવું નહિ.Since these things are undeniable, you ought to be calm and not do anything rash.

37કેમ કે તમે આ માણસોને અહીં લાવ્યા છો, તેઓ મંદિરોને લૂંટનારા નથી, આપણા દેવીની નિંદા કરનારા પણ નથી.For you have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed our temple nor blasphemed our goddess.

38માટે જો દેમેત્રિયસને તથા તેના સાથેના સાથી કારીગરોને કોઈના પર કશી ફરિયાદ કરવી હોય તો અદાલત ખુલ્લી છે, અને અધિકારીઓ પણ છે, માટે તેઓ એકબીજાની સામે ફરિયાદ કરી શકે.So if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open and proconsuls are available. Let them bring charges against one another there.

39પણ જો કોઈ બીજી બાબતો વિષે તમે ન્યાય માંગતા હો, તો કાયદેસર નીમેલી સભામાં તેનો નિર્ણય કરવામાં આવશે.But if you are seeking anything beyond this, it must be settled in a legal assembly.

40કેમ કે આજે કારણ વિના હંગામો થયો તે વિષે આપણી સામે ફરિયાદ થવાનો ખરેખર સંભવ છે; અને તેના સંબંધમાં આ ભીડ થયાનો ખુલાસો આપણે આપી શકવાના નથી.For we are in jeopardy of being charged with rioting for today’s events, and we have no justification to account for this commotion.”

41તેણે એ વાતો કહીને સભાને સમાપ્ત કરી.After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
