1“हे भाइयों और पूर्वजों, अब तुम्हारे प्रति मेरा बचाव सुनो।”“Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense before you.”

2और जब उन्होंने सुना कि वह उनसे इब्रानी भाषा में बात कर रहा था, तो उन्होंने और भी चुप्पी साध ली। और उसने कहा,When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more quiet. Then Paul declared,

3“मैं एक यहूदी मनुष्य हूँ, जो किलिकिया के तरसुस में जन्मा परन्तु हमारे पूर्वजों की व्यवस्था की कठोरता के अनुसार निर्देशित होकर, इसी नगर में गमलीएल के चरणों में शिक्षित हुआ, और परमेश्वर के लिए धुन लगाए हुए था, जैसे आज तुम सब हो,“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but raised in this city. I was educated at the feet of Gamaliel in strict conformity to the law of our fathers. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.

4जिसने इस पंथ को मृत्यु तक सताया, पुरुषों और स्त्रियों दोनों को बाँधा और बन्दीगृह में डाल दिया,I persecuted this Way even to the death, detaining both men and women and throwing them into prison,

I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to apprehend these people and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.

6और मेरे साथ ऐसा हुआ कि, यात्रा करते हुए और दोपहर के लगभग दमिश्क के निकट पहुँचकर, अचानक स्वर्ग से एक बड़ी ज्योति मेरे चारों ओर चमकी।About noon as I was approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.

7और मैं भूमि पर गिर पड़ा और मैंने एक आवाज मुझ से यह कहते हुए सुनी,‘शाऊल, शाऊल, तू मुझे क्यों सता रहा है?’I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?’

8और मैंने उत्तर दिया,‘प्रभु, तू कौन है?’ और उसने मुझ से कहा,‘मैं यीशु नासरी हूँ, जिसे तू सता रहा है।’‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ He replied.

9अब मेरे साथ वालों ने ज्योति तो देखी, परन्तु जो मुझ से बोल रहा था, उसकी आवाज नहीं सुनी।My companions saw the light, but they could not understand the voice of the One speaking to me.

10परन्तु मैंने कहा,‘प्रभु, मुझे क्या करना चाहिए?’ और प्रभु ने मुझ से कहा,‘उठकर दमिश्क में जा, और वहाँ उस बारे में सब कुछ तुझे बता दिया जाएगा जिसे करने के लिए तुझे नियुक्त किया गया है।’Then I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ ‘Get up and go into Damascus,’ He told me. ‘There you will be told all that you have been appointed to do.’

11और जब मैं उस ज्योति के तेज के कारण स्पष्ट रूप से देख नहीं पा रहा था, तो जो मेरे साथ थे उनके हाथ की अगुवाई के द्वारा, मैं दमिश्क में आया।Because the brilliance of the light had blinded me, my companions led me by the hand into Damascus.

13मेरे पास आया और, मेरे पास खड़े होकर, मुझ से कहा,‘शाऊल, भाई, ऊपर देख।’ और उसी घड़ी मैंने उसकी ओर ऊपर देखा।came and stood beside me. ‘Brother Saul,’ he said, ‘receive your sight.’ And at that moment I could see him.

14और उसने कहा,‘हमारे पूर्वजों के परमेश्वर ने तुझे नियुक्त किया है कि उसकी इच्छा जाने और उस धर्मी को देखे और उसके मुँह से आवाज सुने,Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear His voice.

15क्योंकि जो तूने देखा और सुना है तू सब लोगों के निमित्त उसका गवाह होगा।You will be His witness to everyone of what you have seen and heard.

16और अब, तू देर क्यों कर रहा है? उठकर बपतिस्मा ले और उसका नाम पुकारकर अपने पापों को धो ले।’And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and wash your sins away, calling on His name.’

17और मेरे साथ ऐसा हुआ कि, यरूशलेम लौटकर, और जब मैं मन्दिर में प्रार्थना कर रहा था, तो मैं अचेत अवस्था में चला गया।Later, when I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance

18और मैंने उसे मुझ से यह कहते हुए देखा,‘जल्दी कर और यरूशलेम से शीघ्रता से चला जा, क्योंकि वे मेरे बारे में तेरी गवाही स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे।’and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here will not accept your testimony about Me.’

19और मैंने कहा,‘प्रभु, वे स्वयं ही जानते हैं कि मैं तुझ पर विश्वास करने वालों को बन्दी बना रहा था और आराधनालयों में पीट रहा था।‘Lord,’ I answered, ‘they know very well that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in You.

20और जब तेरे गवाह स्तिफनुस का लहू बहाया गया, तो मैं स्वयं भी वहीं खड़ा था और उसमें सहमत था और उसकी हत्या करने वालों के बाहरी वस्त्रों की पहरेदारी कर रहा था।’And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’

21परन्तु उसने मुझ से कहा,‘चला जा, क्योंकि मैं तुझे अन्यजातियों के पास दूर भेजूँगा।’”Then He said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”

22और वे इस शब्द तक उसकी सुन रहे थे, और उन्होंने यह कहकर अपनी आवाज ऊँची की,“ऐसे मनुष्य को पृथ्वी से मिटा डालो, क्योंकि उसके लिए जीवित रहना उचित नहीं था।”The crowd listened to Paul until he made this statement. Then they lifted up their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He is not fit to live!”

23और जब वे चिल्ला रहे थे और{ अपने} बाहरी वस्त्र उतार रहे थे, और हवा में धूल फेंक रहे थे,As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air,

24तो सरदार ने कोड़े मारकर उसकी जाँच करने की आज्ञा देते हुए उसे गढ़ में लाने का आदेश दिया, ताकि वह जान सके कि वे किस कारण से उसके विरुद्ध इस प्रकार चिल्ला रहे थे।the commander ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks. He directed that Paul be flogged and interrogated to determine the reason for this outcry against him.

25परन्तु जब उन्होंने उसे कोड़े मारने के लिए खींचकर बाहर निकाला, तो पौलुस ने पास खड़े सूबेदार से कहा,“क्या तुम्हारे लिए यह उचित है कि किसी रोमी मनुष्य को, और बिना दोषी ठहराए, कोड़े मारो?”But as they stretched him out to strap him down, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it lawful for you to flog a Roman citizen without a trial?”

26और यह सुनकर, उस सूबेदार ने, सरदार के पास जाकर, यह कहकर समाचार दिया,“तू क्या करने वाला है? क्योंकि यह मनुष्य एक रोमी है।”On hearing this, the centurion went and reported it to the commander. “What are you going to do?” he said. “This man is a Roman citizen.”

27अत: सरदार ने आकर उससे कहा,“मुझे बता, क्या तू एक रोमी है?” और उसने कहा,“हाँ।”The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes,” he answered.

28और सरदार ने उत्तर दिया,“मैंने यह नागरिकता बड़ी मात्रा में रुपयों से खरीदी है।” परन्तु पौलुस ने कहा,“परन्तु मैं तो वास्तव में जन्म से ही था।”“I paid a high price for my citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.

29तब जो लोग उसकी जाँच करने वाले थे तुरन्त उसके पास से पीछे हट गए, और सरदार भी यह जानकर डर गया कि वह एक रोमी था, क्योंकि वास्तव में उसी ने उसे बाँधा था।At once those who were about to interrogate Paul stepped back, and the commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.

30और दूसरे दिन, निश्चचय ही यह जानने की इच्छा रखते हुए, कि यहूदियों के द्वारा उस पर दोष क्यों लगाया जा रहा था, उसने उसे छोड़ दिया, और प्रधान याजकों और सारी महासभा को इकट्ठा होने की आज्ञा दी। और पौलुस को नीचे लाकर, उसने उसे उनके बीच में खड़ा कर दिया।The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
