1 UDB यरदन नदी के पश्चिमी तट के क्षेत्रों पर राज करनेवाले अनेक राजा थे। वे हित्तियों, एमोरियों, कनानियों, परिज्जियों, हिव्वियों और यबूसियों के राजा थे। वे पहाड़ी क्षेत्र में, पश्चिम की ओर निचली पहाड़ियों में और भूमध्य सागर के निकट के मैदानों में रहते थे। ऐ के साथ जो हुआ उसके बारे में उन्होंने सुना। BSB BSB: Now when news of this reached all the kings west of the Jordan—those in the hill country, the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon (the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)—

6 UDB वे गिलगाल गए जहाँ यहोशू और इस्राएलियों के तम्बू थे। उन्होंने उनसे कहा, "हम बहुत दूर के देश से यात्रा करके आए हैं। कृपया हमारे साथ शान्ति का समझौता करो।" BSB BSB: They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”
7 UDB इस्राएली अगुवों ने गिलाद के उन लोगों से कहा (वे हिब्बी थे), "ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि तुम लोग निकट के ही रहनेवाले हो। हम तुम्हारे साथ समझौता कैसे कर सकते हैं?" BSB BSB: But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”
8 UDB उन्होंने बल देकर यहोशू को उत्तर दिया, "हम आपके सेवक हैं!" परन्तु यहोशू ने उत्तर दिया, "तुम कौन हो? तुम वास्तव में कहाँ से आते हो?" BSB BSB: “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where have you come from?”
9 UDB गिबोन के लोगों ने उत्तर दिया, "हम आपके सेवक बनना चाहते हैं। हम आपके परमेश्वर यहोवा की प्रसिद्धि के कारण दूर देश से यहाँ आए हैं। हमने मिस्र में उसके द्वारा किए गए सब महान कामों के बारे में सुना है। BSB BSB: “Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
10 UDB और हमने सुना है कि उसने एमोरियों के उन दो राजाओं के साथ क्या किया जो यरदन नदी के पूर्व की ओर हैं– सीहोन, जो राजा हेशबोन में शासन करता था, और ओग, बाशान का राजा जो अश्तारोत में रहता था। BSB BSB: and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.

Please make a treaty with us.’
12 UDB "हमारी रोटी को देखो। जब हमने यहाँ तुम्हारे पास आने के लिए अपने घरों को छोड़ा था तब ये रोटियाँ ताज़ी और गर्म थीं। परन्तु अब यह सूखी और फफूंदी लगी हुई हैं। BSB BSB: This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But look, it is now dry and moldy.
13 UDB हमारे चमड़े के शराब के थैलों को देखो, हमारे निकलने से पहले हमने उन्हें शराब से भर दिया था तब वे नए थे, लेकिन अब वे फटे हुए और पुराने हैं। यहाँ आने के लिए लम्बी यात्रा करने के कारण हमारे कपड़े और हमारी जूतियाँ फट गई हैं।" BSB BSB: These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.”
14 UDB इस्राएली अगुवों ने उनके कुछ पुराने भोजन को स्वीकार कर लिया और शान्ति समझौता करने के लिए उनके साथ भोजन खाया। उन्होंने यहोवा से पूछने के बारे में नहीं सोचा कि उन्हें क्या करना चाहिए। BSB BSB: Then the men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not seek the counsel of the LORD.
15 UDB इस प्रकार, यहोशू उनके साथ शान्ति हेतु तैयार हो गया। इस्राएलियों ने गिबोन के लोगों के साथ समझौता किया, जिसमें वे इन परदेशियों को न मारने के लिए सहमत हो गए थे। सब इस्राएली अगुवों ने इसके निमित्त गम्भीर शपथ खाई। BSB BSB: And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them.
16 UDB परन्तु, तीन दिन बाद इस्राएलियों ने जान लिया कि वे पुरुष गिबोन से आए थे और वे वास्तव में निकट ही रहते थे। BSB BSB: Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.
17 UDB इसलिए वे वहाँ गए जहाँ गिबोन के लोग रहते थे। केवल तीन दिन की यात्रा करने के बाद, वे उनके शहरों में आए: गिबोन, कपीरा, बेरोत और किर्यत्यारीम। BSB BSB: So the Israelites set out and on the third day arrived at their cities—Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
18 UDB परन्तु इस्राएलियों ने उन शहरों पर आक्रमण नहीं किया क्योंकि उन्होंने उनके साथ शान्ति की गम्भीर शपथ खाई थी, और यहोवा ने उनकी इस प्रतिज्ञा को सुना था। इस समझौते के कारण सब इस्राएली अपने अगुवों के प्रति क्रोधित थे। BSB BSB: But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders.
19 UDB परन्तु अगुवों ने उत्तर दिया, "हमने उनके साथ शान्ति से रहने की शपथ खाई है और इस्राएल के परमेश्वर, यहोवा ने हमारी इस शपथ को सुना है। इसलिए अब हम उन्हें कोई हानि नहीं पहुँचा सकते। BSB BSB: All the leaders answered, “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
20 UDB यदि हम उन्हें मार डालते हैं, तो परमेश्वर हमसे बहुत क्रोधित होगा और हमें दण्ड देगा क्योंकि हमने उनके साथ खाई अपनी शपथ को पूरा नहीं किया है, यह हमें गम्भीर शपथ से बाँधता है। परन्तु हम ऐसा कर सकते हैं: BSB BSB: This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we swore to them.”
21 UDB हम उन्हें जीने देंगे, परन्तु वे हमारे दास बने रहेंगे; वे लकड़ी काटेंगे और सब लोगों के लिए पानी भर कर लाएँगे।" अगुवों ने जैसी योजना बनाई थी वैसा ही हुआ। BSB BSB: They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
22 UDB तब यहोशू ने गिबोन से लोगों को बुलाया और उनसे पूछा, "तुमने हमसे झूठ क्यों बोला? तुम्हारे घर हमारे निकट हैं; तुम हमारे निकट रहते हो, परन्तु हमें बताया कि तुम बहुत दूर देश से आए थे! BSB BSB: Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?
23 UDB अब तुम एक श्राप के अधीन रहोगे। तुम सदा के लिए हमारे दास होगे और हमारे परमेश्वर के घर के लिए लकड़ी काट कर लाओगे तथा पानी भरोगे।" BSB BSB: Now therefore you are under a curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
24 UDB गिबोन के लोगों ने उत्तर दिया, "हमने आपसे झूठ बोला क्योंकि हम डर गए थे कि आप हमें मार डालेंगे। हमने सुना है कि यहोवा, जो तुम्हारा परमेश्वर है, उसने अपने दास मूसा को कह दिया था कि वह आपके लोगों को कनान में रहनेवाले हम सब को मारने में सक्षम करेंगे, और वह तुम्हें हमारा देश दे देंगे। BSB BSB: The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
25 UDB तो अब आपको यह निर्णय लेना होगा कि तुम हमारे साथ क्या करोगे। जो कुछ भी तुम्हें अच्छा और सही लगता है वह तुम हमारे साथ करो।" BSB BSB: Now we are in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”
26 UDB अतः यहोशू ने गिबोन के लोगों की जान बचाई; उसने इस्राएल की सेना को अनुमति नहीं दी कि उनकी हानि करें। BSB BSB: So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
27 UDB उसने उन्हें इस्राएलियों के दास होने के लिए विवश किया। वे लकड़ी काटते थे और इस्राएल के लिए पानी भरते थे। साथ ही वे यहोवा की पवित्र वेदी के लिए आवश्यक लकड़ी और पानी भी लाते थे। और गिबोन के लोग आज भी, इस समय तक, ऐसा कर रहे हैं। BSB BSB: On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
