2. 1JPSAnd the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.BSBBSB: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
3. 2JPSAnd on the seventh day God finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.BSBBSB: And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
4. 3JPSAnd God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it He rested from all His work which God in creating had made.BSBBSB: Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.

5. Man and Woman in the Garden

6. 4JPSThese are the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven.BSBBSB: This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made them.
7. 5JPSNo shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground;BSBBSB: Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
8. 6JPSbut there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.BSBBSB: But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
9. 7JPSThen the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.BSBBSB: Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
10. 8JPSAnd the LORD God planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed.BSBBSB: And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
11. 9JPSAnd out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.BSBBSB: Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
12. 10JPSAnd a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became four heads.BSBBSB: Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters:
13. 11JPSThe name of the first is Pishon; that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;BSBBSB: The name of the first river is the Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
14. 12JPSand the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the onyx stone.BSBBSB: And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there.
15. 13JPSAnd the name of the second river is Gihon; the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Cush.BSBBSB: The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
16. 14JPSAnd the name of the third river is Tigris; that is it which goeth toward the east of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.BSBBSB: The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
17. 15JPSAnd the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.BSBBSB: Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
18. 16JPSAnd the LORD God commanded the man, saying: 'Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat;BSBBSB: And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
19. 17JPSbut of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.'BSBBSB: but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
20. 18JPSAnd the LORD God said: 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.'BSBBSB: The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”
21. 19JPSAnd out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them; and whatsoever the man would call every living creature, that was to be the name thereof.BSBBSB: And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and He brought them to the man to see what he would name each one. And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
22. 20JPSAnd the man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.BSBBSB: The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
23. 21JPSAnd the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the place with flesh instead thereof.BSBBSB: So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
24. 22JPSAnd the rib, which the LORD God had taken from the man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man.BSBBSB: And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
25. 23JPSAnd the man said: 'This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.'BSBBSB: And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”
26. 24JPSTherefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.BSBBSB: For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
27. 25JPSAnd they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.BSBBSB: And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
