Murdock New Testament (Peshitta)Berean Standard Bible

1. Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

2. 1MURAnd while passing, he saw a man blind from his mother's womb.BSBBSB: Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,
3. 2MURAnd his disciples asked him, and said: Our Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?BSBBSB: and His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
4. 3MURJesus said to them: Neither did he sin, nor his parents; but that the works of God might be seen in him.BSBBSB: Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him.
5. 4MURI must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day; the night cometh, in which no one can work.BSBBSB: While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
6. 5MURSo long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.BSBBSB: While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
7. 6MURAnd having spoken thus, he spit on the ground, and made mud with the spittle, and spread it on the eyes of the blind man;BSBBSB: When Jesus had said this, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and applied it to the man’s eyes.
8. 7MURand said to him: Go, wash in the baptistery of Siloam. And he went, and washed, and came away seeing.BSBBSB: Then He told him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing.
9. 8MURAnd his neighbors, and they by whom he had before been seen begging, said: Is not this he, who sat and begged?BSBBSB: At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”
10. 9MURSome said, It is he: and others said, No; but he is very like him. But he said: I am he.BSBBSB: Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”
11. 10MURAnd they said to him: How were thy eyes opened?BSBBSB: “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
12. 11MURHe answered, and said to them: A man whose name is Jesus, made mud and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, Go, wash in the waters of Siloam. And I went, and washed, and my sight was restored.BSBBSB: He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.”
13. 12MURThey said to him: Where is he? He said to them: I know not.BSBBSB: “Where is He?” they asked. “I do not know,” he answered.

14. The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

15. 13MURAnd they brought him that had been blind, before the Pharisees.BSBBSB: They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
16. 14MURNow it was on the sabbath that Jesus made the mud, and opened his eyes.BSBBSB: Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
17. 15MURAnd again the Pharisees asked him: How was thy sight restored? And he said to them: He put mud upon my eyes, and I washed, and my sight was restored.BSBBSB: So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
18. 16MURAnd some of the Pharisees said: This man is not of God, for he doth not observe the sabbath. But others said: How can a man that is a sinner, work these signs? And there was a division among them.BSBBSB: Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was division among them.
19. 17MURThey say again to the blind man: What sayest thou of him, seeing he hath opened thy eyes? He said to them: I say, that he is a prophet.BSBBSB: So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” “He is a prophet,” the man replied.
20. 18MURAnd the Jews would not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and recovered sight, until they called the parents of him who recovered sight.BSBBSB: The Jews still did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned his parents
21. 19MURAnd they asked them: Is this your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? And how doth he now see?BSBBSB: and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?”
22. 20MURAnd his parents answered and said: We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;BSBBSB: His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.
23. 21MURbut how he now seeth, or who opened his eyes, we know not. He hath come to his years, ask him; he will speak for himself.BSBBSB: But how he can now see or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”
24. 22MURThese things said his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had decided, that if any one should confess him to be Messiah, they would expel him from the synagogue.BSBBSB: His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
25. 23MURFor this reason his parents said, He hath come to his years, ask him.BSBBSB: That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”
26. 24MURAnd they called a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him: Give glory to God; for we know that this man is a sinner.BSBBSB: So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”
27. 25MURHe replied, and said to them: Whether he is a sinner, I know not; but, one thing I know, that I was blind, and lo, now I see.BSBBSB: He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!”
28. 26MURThey said to him again: What did he to thee? How did he open thy eyes?BSBBSB: “What did He do to you?” they asked. “How did He open your eyes?”
29. 27MURHe said to them: I have told you, and ye did not hear. Why would ye hear again? Do ye also wish to become his disciples?BSBBSB: He replied, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
30. 28MURBut they reproached him, and said to him: Thou art his disciple, but we are the disciples of Moses.BSBBSB: Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses.
31. 29MURAnd we know that God conversed with Moses; but as for this man, we know not whence he is.BSBBSB: We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”
32. 30MURThe man replied and said to them: In this therefore is something to be admired, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he hath opened my eyes.BSBBSB: “That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
33. 31MURNow we know, that God heareth not the voice of sinners; but him that feareth him, and doeth his pleasure, him he heareth.BSBBSB: We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will.
34. 32MURNever hath it been heard, that any one opened the eyes of one born blind.BSBBSB: Never before has anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
35. 33MURIf this man were not of God, he could not do this thing.BSBBSB: If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”
36. 34MURThey replied, and said to him: Thou wast wholly born in sins; and dost thou teach us? And they expelled him.BSBBSB: They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.

37. Spiritual Blindness

38. 35MURAnd Jesus heard that they had expelled him; and he found him, and said to him: Believest thou on the Son of God?BSBBSB: When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
39. 36MURAnd he that was healed, answered and said: My Lord, who is he, that I may believe on him?BSBBSB: “Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”
40. 37MURJesus said to him: Thou hast seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.BSBBSB: “You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”
41. 38MURAnd he said: My Lord, I believe: and he fell down, and worshipped him.BSBBSB: “Lord, I believe,” he said. And he worshiped Jesus.
42. 39MURAnd Jesus said: For the judgment of this world, have I come; that they who see not, might see; and that they who see, might become blind.BSBBSB: Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”
43. 40MURAnd some of those Pharisees who were with him, heard these things; and they said to him: How? Are we also blind?BSBBSB: Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”
44. 41MURJesus said to them: If ye were blind, ye would be without sin; but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin is established.BSBBSB: “If you were blind,” Jesus replied, “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”
