1ଭାଇମାନେ ଓ ପିତାମାନେ, ମୁଁ ଆପଣମାନଙ୍କ ନିକଟରେ ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ଯେଉଁ ଆତ୍ମପକ୍ଷ ସମର୍ଥନର କଥା କହୁଅଛି, ତାହା ଶୁଣନ୍ତୁ।“Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense before you.”

2ସେ ଏବ୍ରୀ ଭାଷାରେ ସେମାନଙ୍କ ନିକଟରେ କଥା କହୁଅଛନ୍ତି ଶୁଣି ସେମାନେ ଅଧିକ ନୀରବ ହୋଇ ରହିଲେ।When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more quiet. Then Paul declared,

3ସେଥିରେ ସେ କହିଲେ, ମୁଁ ଜଣେ ଯିହୂଦୀ, କିଲିକିଆର ତାର୍ଷରେ ମୋହର ଜନ୍ମ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଏହି ନଗରରେ ମୁଁ ଲାଳିତ ପାଳିତ ହୋଇଅଛି, ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ପିତୃପୁରୁଷଙ୍କ ମୋଶାଙ୍କ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥାର ସୂକ୍ଷ୍ମ ନିୟମ ଅନୁସାରେ ଗମଲୀୟେଲଙ୍କ ଚରଣ ତଳେ ବସି ଶିକ୍ଷା ପାଇଅଛି; ସମସ୍ତେ ଆଜି ଆପଣମାନେ ଯେପରି ଉଦ୍‍ଯୋଗୀ ଅଟନ୍ତି, ଈଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପକ୍ଷରେ ମୁଁ ମଧ୍ୟ ସେହିପରି ଉଦ୍‍ଯୋଗୀ ଥିଲି;“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but raised in this city. I was educated at the feet of Gamaliel in strict conformity to the law of our fathers. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.

4ମୁଁ ଏହି ମାର୍ଗର ପୁରୁଷ ଓ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଉଭୟଙ୍କୁ ବାନ୍ଧି କାରାଗାରରେ ପକାଇ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ତାଡ଼ନା କରୁଥିଲି।I persecuted this Way even to the death, detaining both men and women and throwing them into prison,

5ଏହି ବିଷୟରେ ମହାଯାଜକ ଓ ପ୍ରାଚୀନବର୍ଗ ସମସ୍ତେ ମୋହର ସାକ୍ଷୀ; ମୁଁ ସେମାନଙ୍କଠାରୁ ଭାଇମାନଙ୍କ ନିକଟକୁ ପତ୍ର ଗ୍ରହଣ କରି, ଦମ୍ମେସକରେ ଥିବା ଲୋକମାନେ ଯେପରି ଶାସ୍ତି ପାଆନ୍ତି, ଏଥିପାଇଁ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ସୁଦ୍ଧା ବାନ୍ଧି ଯିରୂଶାଲମକୁ ଆଣିବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ସେ ସ୍ଥାନକୁ ଯାଉଥିଲି।as the high priest and the whole Council can testify about me. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to apprehend these people and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.

6କିନ୍ତୁ ମୁଁ ଯାଉ ଯାଉ ଦମ୍ମେସକର ନିକଟବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ହୁଅନ୍ତେ ହଠାତ୍ ପ୍ରାୟ ମଧ୍ୟାହ୍ନ ସମୟରେ ମୋହର ଚାରିଆଡ଼େ ଆକାଶରୁ ମହା ଆଲୋକ ଚମକିଉଠିଲା।About noon as I was approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.

7ମୁଁ ସେଥିରେ ଭୂମିରେ ପଡ଼ିଗଲି, ଆଉ ମୋ ପ୍ରତି ଉକ୍ତ ଏହି ବାଣୀ ଶୁଣିଲି, ଶାଉଲ, ଶାଉଲ, ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ କାହିଁକି ତାଡ଼ନା କରୁଅଛ?I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?’

8ମୁଁ ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲି, ପ୍ରଭୁ, ଆପଣ କିଏ? ସେଥିରେ ସେ ମୋତେ କହିଲେ, ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଯେଉଁ ନାଜରିତୀୟ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କୁ ତାଡ଼ନା କରୁଅଛ, ଆମ୍ଭେ ସେହି।‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ He replied.

9ଯେଉଁମାନେ ମୋ ସାଙ୍ଗରେ ଥିଲେ, ସେମାନେ ସେହି ଆଲୋକ ଦେଖିଲେ ସତ୍ୟ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଯେ ମୋତେ କଥା କହିଲେ, ସେମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ସ୍ୱର ଶୁଣିଲେ ନାହିଁ।My companions saw the light, but they could not understand the voice of the One speaking to me.

10ସେଥିରେ ମୁଁ କହିଲି, ପ୍ରଭୁ ମୁଁ କ'ଣ କରିବି? ପୁଣି, ପ୍ରଭୁ ମୋତେ କହିଲେ, ଉଠ, ଦମ୍ମେସକକୁ ଯାଅ, ଆଉ ଯେ ସମସ୍ତ କର୍ମ ସାଧନ କରିବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ତୁମ୍ଭ ପାଇଁ ନିରୁପିତ ଅଛି, ସେ ସବୁ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ସେଠାରେ କୁହାଯିବ।Then I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ ‘Get up and go into Damascus,’ He told me. ‘There you will be told all that you have been appointed to do.’

11ମୁଁ ସେହି ଆଲୋକର ତେଜ ହେତୁ ଦେଖି ନ ପାରିବାରୁ, ମୋ ସାଙ୍ଗରେ ଥିବା ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଚାଳିତ ହୋଇ ଦମ୍ମେସକକୁ ଆସିଲି।Because the brilliance of the light had blinded me, my companions led me by the hand into Damascus.

12ସେହି ସ୍ଥାନରେ ଥିବା ସମସ୍ତ ଯିହୂଦୀଙ୍କ ନିକଟରେ ସୁକ୍ଷାତିସମ୍ପନ୍ନ ହନନୀୟ ନାମକ ମୋଶାଙ୍କ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା ଅନୁସାରେ ଜଣେ ଭକ୍ତ ଲୋକ,There a man named Ananias, a devout observer of the law who was highly regarded by all the Jews living there,

13ମୋ' ନିକଟକୁ ଆସି ପାଖରେ ଠିଆ ହୋଇ ମୋତେ କହିଲେ, ଭାଇ ଶାଉଲ, ଦୃଷ୍ଟିପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ହୁଅ। ସେହି ମୁହୁର୍ତ୍ତରେ ମୁଁ ତାହାଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ଦୃଷ୍ଟିପାତ କଲି।came and stood beside me. ‘Brother Saul,’ he said, ‘receive your sight.’ And at that moment I could see him.

14ପୁଣି, ସେ କହିଲେ, ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ପିତୃପୁରୁଷଙ୍କର ଈଶ୍ୱର ତାହାଙ୍କ ଇଚ୍ଛା ଜାଣିବା ପାଇଁ ଓ ସେହି ଧାର୍ମିକ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତିଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖିବା ପାଇଁ ପୁଣି, ତାହାଙ୍କ ମୁଖରୁ ବାଣୀ ଶୁଣିବା ପାଇଁ ମନୋନୀତ କରିଅଛନ୍ତି,Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear His voice.

15କାରଣ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଯାହା ଯାହା ଦେଖିଅଛ ଓ ଶୁଣିଅଛ, ସେହି ସବୁ ବିଷୟରେ ସମସ୍ତ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ସମ୍ମୁଖରେ ସାକ୍ଷୀ ହେବ।You will be His witness to everyone of what you have seen and heard.

16ଆଉ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଏବେ କାହିଁକି ବିଳମ୍ବ କରୁଅଛ? ଉଠ, ବାପ୍ତିଜିତ ହୁଅ, ପୁଣି, ତାହାଙ୍କ ନାମରେ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରି ନିଜ ପାପସବୁ ଧୋଇ ପକାଅ।And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and wash your sins away, calling on His name.’

17ଏଥିଉତ୍ତାରେ ମୁଁ ଯିରୂଶାଲମକୁ ଫେରିଆସି ମନ୍ଦିରରେ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରୁଥିବା ସମୟରେ ମୂର୍ଚ୍ଛିତ ହୋଇ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଦର୍ଶନ କଲି।Later, when I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance

18ସେ ମୋତେ କହିଲେ, ବିଳମ୍ବ ନ କରି ଶୀଘ୍ର ଯିରୂଶାଲମରୁ ବାହାରିଯାଅ, କାରଣ ସେମାନେ ଆମ୍ଭ ବିଷୟରେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ସାକ୍ଷ୍ୟ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରିବେ ନାହିଁ।and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here will not accept your testimony about Me.’

19ସେଥିରେ ମୁଁ କହିଲି, ପ୍ରଭୁ, ମୁଁ ଯେ ଆପଣଙ୍କଠାରେ ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରୁଥିବା ସମସ୍ତଙ୍କୁ ସମାଜଗୃହରେ ଧରି କାରାଗାରରେ ପକାଉଥିଲି ଓ ପ୍ରହାର କରୁଥିଲି, ଏହା ସେମାନେ ନିଜେ ଜାଣନ୍ତି;‘Lord,’ I answered, ‘they know very well that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in You.

20ଆଉ ଆପଣଙ୍କ ସାକ୍ଷୀ ସ୍ତିଫାନଙ୍କ ରକ୍ତପାତ ଯେତେବେଳେ ହେଉଥିଲା, ସେତେବେଳେ ମୁଁ ମଧ୍ୟ ପାଖରେ ଠିଆ ହୋଇ ତାହା ସମର୍ଥନ କରୁଥିଲି, ପୁଣି, ଘାତକମାନଙ୍କର ବସ୍ତ୍ର ରକ୍ଷା କରୁଥିଲି।And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’

21ସେଥିରେ ସେ ମୋତେ କହିଲେ, ଯାଅ, କାରଣ ଆମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଦୂରକୁ ଅଣଯିହୂଦୀମାନଙ୍କ ନିକଟକୁ ପଠାଇବୁ।Then He said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”

22ଲୋକମାନେ ଏହି କଥା ଶୁଣିବା ପରେ ବଡ଼ ପାଟିରେ କହିଲେ, ଏପରି ଲୋକଟାକୁ ପୃଥିବୀରୁ ଦୂର କର, କାରଣ ତାହାର ବଞ୍ଚି ରହିବାର ଉଚିତ ନୁହେଁ।The crowd listened to Paul until he made this statement. Then they lifted up their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He is not fit to live!”

23ପୁଣି, ଯେତେବେଳେ ସେମାନେ ଚିତ୍କାର କରି ନିଜ ନିଜ ବସ୍ତ୍ର ଫୋପାଡ଼ି ଆକାଶ ଆଡ଼କୁ ଧୂଳି ପକାଇବାକୁ ଲାଗିଲେ,As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air,

24ସେତେବେଳେ ସହସ୍ର ସେନାପତି ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ଗଡ଼ ଭିତରକୁ ନେଇଯିବାକୁ ଅାଦେଶ ଦେଲେ, ପୁଣି, ଲୋକେ କାହିଁକି ତାହାଙ୍କ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ ଏପ୍ରକାର ଚିତ୍କାର କରୁଅଛନ୍ତି, ଏହା ଜାଣିବା ପାଇଁ କୋରଡ଼ା ପ୍ରହାର ଦ୍ୱାରା ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ପରୀକ୍ଷା କରିବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ଆଦେଶ ଦେଲେ।the commander ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks. He directed that Paul be flogged and interrogated to determine the reason for this outcry against him.

25ସେମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ବେତ୍ରାଘାତ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ବାନ୍ଧିଲା ଉତ୍ତାରେ,ସେ ନିକଟରେ ଠିଆ ହୋଇଥିବା ଶତ ସେନାପତିଙ୍କି କହିଲେ, ଜଣେ ରୋମୀୟ ପ୍ରଜାର ବିଚାର ନ କରି ତାହାକୁ କୋରଡ଼ା ମାରିବା ଆପଣମାନଙ୍କ ପକ୍ଷରେ କି ଆଇନସଙ୍ଗତ?But as they stretched him out to strap him down, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it lawful for you to flog a Roman citizen without a trial?”

26ସେହି ଶତସେନାପତି ଏହା ଶୁଣି ସହସ୍ର ସେନାପତିଙ୍କ ନିକଟକୁ ଯାଇ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ସେହି କଥା ଜଣାଇ କହିଲେ, ଆପଣ କ'ଣ କରିବାକୁ ଯାଉଅଛନ୍ତି?On hearing this, the centurion went and reported it to the commander. “What are you going to do?” he said. “This man is a Roman citizen.”

27ସେଥିରେ ସହସ୍ର ସେନାପତି ଆସି ତାହାଙ୍କୁ କହିଲେ, ମୋତେ କୁହ, ତୁମ୍ଭେ କି ଜଣେ ରୋମୀୟ? ସେ କହିଲେ ହଁ।The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes,” he answered.

28ସେଥିରେ ସହସ୍ର ସେନାପତି ଉତ୍ତର ଦେଲେ, ଅନେକ ଅର୍ଥ ଦେଇ ମୁଁ ଏହି ନାଗରିକ ପଦ ପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ହୋଇଅଛି। ପାଉଲ କହିଲେ, କିନ୍ତୁ ମୁଁ ଜନ୍ମରେ ରୋମୀୟ।“I paid a high price for my citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.

29ତେବେ ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକମାନେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ପରୀକ୍ଷା କରିବାକୁ ଚେଷ୍ଟା କରୁଥିଲେ, ସେମାନେ ସେହିକ୍ଷଣି ସେଥିରୁ ନିବୃତ୍ତ ହେଲେ, ସହସ୍ର ସେନାପତି ସୁଦ୍ଧା ସେ ଯେ ଜଣେ ରୋମୀୟ, ଏହା ବୁଝିବାରୁ ଏବଂ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ବାନ୍ଧିବାରୁ ଭୟ କଲେ।At once those who were about to interrogate Paul stepped back, and the commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.

30କିନ୍ତୁ କାହିଁକି ସେ ଯିହୂଦୀମାନଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଅଭିଯୁକ୍ତ ହୋଇଅଛନ୍ତି, ତାହା ନିଶ୍ଚୟରୂପେ ଜାଣିବା ଇଚ୍ଛାରେ ସେ ପରଦିନ ତାହାଙ୍କର ବନ୍ଧନ ଫିଟାଇ ପ୍ରଧାନ ଯାଜକ ଓ ସମସ୍ତ ମହାସଭାକୁ ଏକତ୍ର ଆସିବା ପାଇଁ ଆଜ୍ଞା ଦେଲେ, ପୁଣି, ପାଉଲଙ୍କୁ ନେଇ ସେମାନଙ୍କ ସମ୍ମୁଖରେ ଠିଆ କରାଇଲେ।The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
