GLT Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
GLT “Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem, and speak against the sanctuaries; prophesy against the land of Israel. BSB BSB: “Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel
GLT Say to the land of Israel,‘Yahweh says this: Behold! I am against you! I will draw my sword from its sheath and cut off both the righteous person and the wicked person from you! BSB BSB: and tell her that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you, and I will draw My sword from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.
GLT In order for me to cut off both the righteous and the wicked from you, my sword will go out from its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north. BSB BSB: Because I will cut off both the righteous and the wicked, My sword will be unsheathed against everyone from south to north.
GLT Then all flesh will know that I, Yahweh, have drawn my sword from its sheath. It will no longer hold back!’ BSB BSB: Then all flesh will know that I, the LORD, have taken My sword from its sheath, not to return it again.’
GLT As for you, son of man, groan as your loins break! In bitterness groan before their eyes! BSB BSB: But you, son of man, groan! Groan before their eyes with a broken heart and bitter grief.
GLT Then it will happen that they will ask you,‘For what reason are you groaning?’ Then you will say,‘Because of the news that is coming, for every heart will faint away, and every hand will falter! Every spirit will grow faint, and every knee will flow like water. Behold! It is coming and it will be like this!— this is the Lord Yahweh’ s declaration.’” BSB BSB: And when they ask, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you are to say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt, and every hand will go limp. Every spirit will faint, and every knee will turn to water.’ Yes, it is coming and it will surely happen, declares the Lord GOD.”
GLT Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
GLT “Son of man, prophesy and say,‘The Lord says this:“Say: A sword! A sword! It will be sharpened and polished! BSB BSB: “Son of man, prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord says: ‘A sword, a sword, sharpened and polished—
GLT It will be sharpened in order to engage in great slaughter! It will be polished in order to be like lightning! Should we rejoice in my son’ s scepter? The coming sword hates every such rod! BSB BSB: it is sharpened for the slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! Should we rejoice in the scepter of My son? The sword despises every such stick.
GLT So the sword will be given to be polished, and then to be grasped by the hand! The sword is sharpened and it is polished and it is to be given into the hand of the one who kills!”’” BSB BSB: The sword is appointed to be polished, to be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished, to be placed in the hand of the slayer.
GLT Call for help and lament, son of man! For that sword has come against my people! It is against all the leaders of Israel. They are thrown against the sword with my people. Therefore, slap your thigh! BSB BSB: Cry out and wail, O son of man, for the sword is wielded against My people; it is against all the princes of Israel! They are tossed to the sword with My people; therefore strike your thigh.
GLT For there is a trial, but what if the scepter does not last?— this is the Lord Yahweh’ s declaration. BSB BSB: Surely testing will come! And what if even the scepter, which the sword despises, does not continue?’ declares the Lord GOD.
GLT Now you, son of man, prophesy and hit your two hands together, for the sword will attack even a third time! A sword for the ones to be slaughtered! It is a sword for the many to be slaughtered, piercing them everywhere! BSB BSB: ‘So then, son of man, prophesy and strike your hands together. Let the sword strike two times, even three. It is a sword that slays, a sword of great slaughter closing in on every side!
GLT In order to melt their hearts and to multiply their fallen, I have set the sword for slaughter at all their gates. Ah! It is made like lightning, it is grasped for slaughter. BSB BSB: So that their hearts may melt and many may stumble, I have appointed at all their gates a sword for slaughter. Yes, it is ready to flash like lightning; it is drawn for slaughter.
GLT You, sword! Strike to the right! Strike to the left! Go wherever your face is turned. BSB BSB: Slash to the right; set your blade to the left—wherever your blade is directed.
GLT For I will also hit my two hands together, and then I will bring my fury to rest! I, Yahweh, declare it!” BSB BSB: I too will strike My hands together, and I will satisfy My wrath.’ I, the LORD, have spoken.”
GLT The word of Yahweh came to me again, saying, BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
GLT “Now you, son of man, assign two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to come. The two roads will start in the same land, and a signpost will mark one of them as leading to a city. BSB BSB: “Now you, son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same land. And make a signpost where the road branches off to each city.
GLT Mark one road for the Babylonian army to come to Rabbah, the city of the Ammonites. Mark the other to lead the army to Judah and the city of Jerusalem, which is fortified. BSB BSB: Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites, and another against Judah into fortified Jerusalem.
GLT For the king of Babylon will stop at the crossroads, at the junction, in order to practice divination. He will shake some arrows and ask direction from some idols and he will examine a liver. BSB BSB: For the king of Babylon stands at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He shakes the arrows, he consults the idols, he examines the liver.
GLT In his right hand will be an omen about Jerusalem, to set battering rams against it, to open his mouth to order the slaughter, to sound a war cry, to set battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp, and to erect siege towers. BSB BSB: In his right hand appears the portent for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to call for the slaughter, to lift a battle cry, to direct the battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp, and to erect a siege wall.
GLT It will seem to be a useless omen in the eyes of the ones in Jerusalem, those who had sworn an oath to the Babylonians! But the king will accuse them of violating their treaty in order to besiege them! BSB BSB: It will seem like a false omen to the eyes of those who have sworn allegiance to him, but it will draw attention to their guilt and take them captive.
GLT Therefore the Lord Yahweh says this: Because you have made your guilt to be remembered, making your transgressions to be revealed, so that in all your actions your sins will be seen— because you have done this you will be taken in hand. BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have drawn attention to your guilt, exposing your transgressions, so that your sins are revealed in all your deeds—because you have come to remembrance—you shall be taken in hand.
GLT As for you, profane and wicked ruler of Israel, whose day of punishment has come, and whose time of committing iniquity has ended, BSB BSB: And you, O profane and wicked prince of Israel, the day has come for your final punishment.’
GLT the Lord Yahweh says this to you: Remove the turban and take off the crown! Things will no longer be the same! Exalt the lowly and humble the exalted! BSB BSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Remove the turban, and take off the crown. Things will not remain as they are: Exalt the lowly and bring low the exalted.
GLT A ruin! A ruin! I will make it a ruin! It will not be restored until the one comes who is assigned to execute judgment. BSB BSB: A ruin, a ruin, I will make it a ruin! And it will not be restored until the arrival of Him to whom it belongs, to whom I have assigned the right of judgment.’
GLT So you, son of man, prophesy and say,‘The Lord Yahweh says this to the people of Ammon concerning their coming disgrace: A sword, a sword is drawn! It is sharpened for the slaughter in order to devour, so it will be like lightning! BSB BSB: Now prophesy, son of man, and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says concerning the Ammonites and their contempt: ‘A sword! A sword is drawn for slaughter, polished to consume, to flash like lightning—
GLT While prophets see empty visions for you, while they perform rituals to come up with lies for you, this sword will lie on the necks of the wicked who are about to be killed, whose day of punishment has come and whose time of iniquity is about to end. BSB BSB: while they offer false visions for you and lying divinations about you—to be placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain, whose day has come, the time of their final punishment.
GLT Return the sword to its sheath. In the place of your creation, in the land of your origin, I will judge you! BSB BSB: Return the sword to its sheath! In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, I will judge you.
GLT I will pour out my indignation on you! I will fan the fire of my rage against you and put you into the hand of cruel men, craftsmen of destruction! BSB BSB: I will pour out My anger upon you; I will breathe the fire of My fury against you; I will hand you over to brutal men, skilled in destruction.
GLT You will become fuel for the fire! Your blood will be in the midst of the land. You will not be remembered, for I, Yahweh have declared this!’” BSB BSB: You will be fuel for the fire. Your blood will stain your own land. You will not be remembered, for I, the LORD, have spoken.’”
