1 GLT Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 GLT “Now you, son of man, will you judge? Will you judge the city of blood? Make her know all her abominations. BSB BSB: “As for you, son of man, will you judge her? Will you pass judgment on the city of bloodshed? Then confront her with all her abominations
3 GLT You must say,‘The Lord Yahweh says this: This is a city that pours out blood in her midst so that her time may come; a city that makes idols to make herself unclean. BSB BSB: and tell her that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘O city who brings her own doom by shedding blood within her walls and making idols to defile herself,
4 GLT You have become guilty by the blood that you have poured out, and you have become unclean by the idols that you have made. You have drawn your days to a close, and the end of your years has come. Therefore I will make you a reproach to the nations and a laughingstock to all the lands. BSB BSB: you are guilty of the blood you have shed, and you are defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your days to a close and have come to the end of your years. Therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations and a mockery to all the lands.
5 GLT Both those who are near and those who are far away from you will mock you— you unclean city— with the reputation known everywhere as being full of confusion. BSB BSB: Those near and far will mock you, O infamous city, full of turmoil.
6 GLT Behold! The rulers of Israel, each one by his own power, have come to you to pour out blood. BSB BSB: See how every prince of Israel within you has used his power to shed blood.
7 GLT They have dishonored fathers and mothers within you, and they have performed oppression on the foreigners in your midst. They have mistreated the orphans and the widows within you. BSB BSB: Father and mother are treated with contempt. Within your walls the foreign resident is exploited, the fatherless and the widow are oppressed.
8 GLT You have despised my holy things and have profaned my Sabbaths. BSB BSB: You have despised My holy things and profaned My Sabbaths.
9 GLT Slanderous men have come within you in order to pour out blood, and they eat on the mountains. They perform wickedness in your midst. BSB BSB: Among you are slanderous men bent on bloodshed; within you are those who eat on the mountain shrines and commit acts of indecency.
10 GLT Within you men uncover the nakedness of their father. Within you they have violated unclean women during their menstrual period. BSB BSB: In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers; in you they violate women during their menstrual impurity.
11 GLT Men who commit abominations with their neighbors’ wives, and men who make their own daughters- in- law shamefully unclean; men who abuse their own sisters— daughters of their own fathers— all these are done within you. BSB BSB: One man commits an abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another wickedly defiles his daughter-in-law; and yet another violates his sister, his own father’s daughter.
12 GLT These men take bribes within you in order to pour out blood and you have taken interest and gained too much profit, and you have damaged your neighbors through oppression, and you have forgotten me— this is the Lord Yahweh’ s declaration. BSB BSB: In you they take bribes to shed blood. You engage in usury, take excess interest, and extort your neighbors. But Me you have forgotten, declares the Lord GOD.
13 GLT See! With my hand I have struck the dishonest gain that you have made, and the bloodshed that is done in the midst of you. BSB BSB: Now look, I strike My hands together against your unjust gain and against the blood you have shed in your midst.
14 GLT Will your heart stand, will your hands be strong on the days when I myself will deal with you? I, Yahweh, am declaring this, and I will do it. BSB BSB: Will your courage endure or your hands be strong in the day I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will act.
15 GLT So I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the lands. In this way, I will purge your uncleanness from you. BSB BSB: I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you throughout the lands; I will purge your uncleanness.
16 GLT So you will become unclean in the eyes of the nations. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’” BSB BSB: And when you have defiled yourself in the eyes of the nations, then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
17 GLT Next the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
18 GLT “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to me. All of them are the leftovers of bronze and tin, and iron and lead in the midst of you. They will be like the dross of silver in your furnace. BSB BSB: “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to Me. All of them are copper, tin, iron, and lead inside the furnace; they are but the dross of silver.
19 GLT Therefore the Lord Yahweh says this,‘Because all of you have become like dross, therefore, behold! I am about to gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because all of you have become dross, behold, I will gather you into Jerusalem.
20 GLT As men gather silver, bronze, iron, lead and tin and put it inside a furnace to melt it, and they blow the fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in my anger and my wrath, and I will put you there and melt you. BSB BSB: Just as one gathers silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin into the furnace to melt with a fiery blast, so I will gather you in My anger and wrath, leave you there, and melt you.
21 GLT I will gather you and blow on you the fire of my wrath, and you will be melted in the midst of it. BSB BSB: Yes, I will gather you together and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted within the city.
22 GLT As silver is melted in a furnace, you will be melted in it, and you will know that I, Yahweh, have poured out my wrath on you!’” BSB BSB: As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted within the city. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have poured out My wrath upon you.’”
23 GLT The word of Yahweh came to me, saying, BSB BSB: And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
24 GLT “Son of man, say to her,‘You are a land that has not been cleansed. There is no rain on the day of wrath! BSB BSB: “Son of man, say to her, ‘In the day of indignation, you are a land that has not been cleansed, upon which no rain has fallen.’
25 GLT There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst, like a roaring lion tearing apart a victim. They consume life and take precious wealth; they make many widows within her! BSB BSB: The conspiracy of the princes in her midst is like a roaring lion tearing its prey. They devour the people, seize the treasures and precious things, and multiply the widows within her.
26 GLT Her priests do violence to my law, and they profane my holy things. They do not distinguish between holy things and profane things, and do not teach the difference between the unclean and the clean. They hide their eyes from my Sabbaths so that I am profaned in their midst. BSB BSB: Her priests do violence to My law and profane My holy things. They make no distinction between the holy and the common, and they fail to distinguish between the clean and the unclean. They disregard My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.
27 GLT Her princes within her are like wolves tearing apart their victims. They pour out blood and destroy life, to make a profit dishonestly. BSB BSB: Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey, shedding blood, and destroying lives for dishonest gain.
28 GLT Her prophets have painted them over with whitewash; they see false visions and predict falsehoods to them. They say“The Lord Yahweh says this” when Yahweh has not spoken. BSB BSB: Her prophets whitewash these deeds by false visions and lying divinations, saying, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says,’ when the LORD has not spoken.
29 GLT The people of the land have oppressed through extortion and plundered through robbery, and they mistreat the poor and needy, and oppress the foreigner without justice. BSB BSB: The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy and have exploited the foreign resident without justice.
30 GLT So I searched for a man from them who would build up a wall and who would stand before me in its breach for the land so I would not destroy it, but I found no one. BSB BSB: I searched for a man among them to repair the wall and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, so that I should not destroy it. But I found no one.
31 GLT So I will pour out my indignation upon them. I will finish them with the fire of my indignation and set their way on their own heads— this is the Lord Yahweh’ s declaration.’” BSB BSB: So I have poured out My indignation upon them and consumed them with the fire of My fury. I have brought their ways down upon their own heads, declares the Lord GOD.”
