1 GLT And Israel dwelled in Shittim, and the people began to prostitute themselves with the daughters of Moab, BSB BSB: While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,
2 GLT and they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate, and they worshipped their gods. BSB BSB: who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.
3 GLT And Israel bound himself to Baal of Peor. And the nose of Yahweh burned against Israel. BSB BSB: So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against them.
4 GLT And Yahweh said to Moses,“Take all the heads of the people and hang them up before Yahweh in front of the sun, and the burning of the nose of Yahweh may turn back from Israel.” BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
5 GLT And Moses said to the judges of Israel,“Slay a man his men, the ones who bound themselves to Baal of Peor.” BSB BSB: So Moses told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
6 GLT And behold, a man from the sons of Israel came and brought near to his brothers the Midianite woman, before the eyes of Moses and before the eyes of all the congregation of the sons of Israel. And they were weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting. BSB BSB: Just then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
7 GLT And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw and rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand. BSB BSB: On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,
8 GLT And he came after the man of Israel into the domed tent, and he pierced the two of them, the man of Israel and the woman in her stomach. And the plague was stopped from on the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: followed the Israelite into the tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted,
9 GLT And the ones who died by the plague were 24, 000. BSB BSB: but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.
10 GLT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
11 GLT “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my heat from on the sons of Israel by his being zealous with my zeal in the midst of them. And I will not make an end of the sons of Israel in my zeal. BSB BSB: “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.
12 GLT Therefore say,‘Behold, I am giving to him my covenant of peace. BSB BSB: Declare, therefore, that I am granting him My covenant of peace.
13 GLT And it will be a covenant of a priesthood of eternity for him and for his seed after him, because he was zealous for his God and he made atonement for the sons of Israel.’” BSB BSB: It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
14 GLT And the name of the man of Israel, the struck down one who was struck down with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, the leader of a house of a father of the Simeonites. BSB BSB: The name of the Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.
15 GLT And the name of the woman, the struck down Midanite woman, was Kozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the head of a tribe of a house of a father in Midian. BSB BSB: And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.
16 GLT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Moses,
17 GLT “Vex the Midianites and you shall strike them down. BSB BSB: “Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.
18 GLT For they were vexing you by their deceitfulness when they deceived you over the matter of Peor and over the matter of Kozbi the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister, the one struck down on the plague day over the matter of Peor.” BSB BSB: For they assailed you deceitfully when they seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”
