1И поклялись израильтяне в Массифе: «Никто из нас не отдаст своих дочерей замуж за сыновей Вениамина».Now the men of Israel had sworn an oath at Mizpah, saying, “Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite.”

2Народ пришёл в Божий дом и сидел там до вечера перед Богом. Они подняли громкий вопль, сильно плакалиSo the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, lifting up their voices and weeping bitterly.

3и сказали: «Господь, Бог Израиля! Почему случилось такое в Израиле, что теперь не станет у Израиля одного колена?»“Why, O LORD God of Israel,” they cried out, “has this happened in Israel? Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”

4На другой день народ встал рано утром, устроил там жертвенник, и вознесли всесожжения и мирные жертвы.The next day the people got up early, built an altar there, and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings.

5И сыновья Израиля сказали: «Кто из всех колен Израиля не приходил на собрание перед Господом? Потому что великое проклятие было на тех, которые не пришли перед Господом в Массифу, и было сказано, что они будут убиты».The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at Mizpah would surely be put to death.

6Сыновья Израиля сжалились над своим братом Вениамином и сказали: «Сегодня отсечено одно колено от Израиля.And the Israelites grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites, and said, “Today a tribe is cut off from Israel.

7Как поступить нам с оставшимися из них в отношении женщин, если мы поклялись Господу не давать им в жёны из наших дочерей?»What should we do about wives for the survivors, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them our daughters in marriage?”

8И сказали: «Нет ли кого из колен Израиля, кто не приходил перед Господом в Массифу?» И оказалось, что из галаадского Иависа никто не приходил перед Господом в лагерь на собрание.So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to come up before the LORD at Mizpah?” And, in fact, no one from Jabesh-gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.

9И осмотрен был народ: не было там ни одного из жителей галаадского Иависа.For when the people were counted, none of the residents of Jabesh-gilead were there.

10Общество послало туда двенадцать тысяч человек, сильных мужчин, и дали им распоряжение: «Идите и поразите мечом жителей галаадского Иависа, и женщин, и детей.So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most valiant men and commanded them: “Go and put to the sword those living in Jabesh-gilead, including women and children.

11Сделайте вот что: любого мужчину и любую женщину, познавшую мужское ложе, предайте заклятию».This is what you are to do: Devote to destruction every male, as well as every female who has had relations with a man.”

12Они нашли среди жителей галаадского Иависа четыреста девственниц, не познавших мужского ложа, и привели их в лагерь в Силом, что в ханаанской земле.So they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.

13И послало все общество переговорить с сыновьями Вениамина, которые были в скале Риммоне, и объявило им мир.Then the whole congregation sent a message of peace to the Benjamites who were at the rock of Rimmon.

14Тогда сыновья Вениамина вернулись, и им дали жён, которых оставили в живых из женщин галаадского Иависа. Но оказалось, что этого было недостаточно.And at that time the Benjamites returned and were given the women who were spared from Jabesh-gilead. But there were not enough women for all of them.

15Народ сожалел о Вениамине, что Господь не сохранил целости колен Израиля.The people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a void in the tribes of Israel.

16И сказали старейшины общества: «Что нам делать с оставшимися в отношении жён, так как истреблены женщины у Вениамина?»Then the elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?”

17И сказали: «Наследственная земля пусть остаётся уцелевшим сыновьям Вениамина, чтобы не исчезло колено в Израиле.They added, “There must be heirs for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.

18Но мы не можем дать им жён из наших дочерей, потому что сыновья Израиля поклялись: "Проклят, кто даст жену Вениамину"».But we cannot give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had sworn, “Cursed is he who gives a wife to a Benjamite.”

19И сказали: «Вот, каждый год бывает праздник Господу в Силоме, который к северу от Вефиля и к востоку от дороги, ведущей от Вефиля в Сихем, и к югу от Левоны».“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in Shiloh, which is north of Bethel east of the road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”

20И сыновьям Вениамина приказали: «Пойдите, спрячьтесь в виноградникахSo they commanded the Benjamites: “Go, hide in the vineyards

21и смотрите, когда выйдут девушки Силома танцевать в хороводах. Тогда выходите из виноградников, схватите каждый себе жену из девушек Силома и идите в землю Вениамина.and watch. When you see the daughters of Shiloh come out to perform their dances, each of you is to come out of the vineyards, catch for himself a wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

22И когда к нам придут их отцы или братья с жалобой, мы скажем им: "Простите нас за них, потому что мы не взяли для каждого из них женщину на войне, и вы не дали им. Теперь вы виноваты"».When their fathers or brothers come to us to complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you have no guilt.’”

23Сыновья Вениамина так и сделали. Взяли женщин по своему числу из бывших в хороводе, которых они похитили, пошли и вернулись в своё владение. Построили города и стали в них жить.The Benjamites did as instructed and carried away the number of women they needed from the dancers they caught. They went back to their own inheritance, rebuilt their cities, and settled in them.

24В это же время израильтяне разошлись оттуда каждый в своё колено и в своё племя и пошли оттуда каждый в своё владение.And at that time, each of the Israelites returned from there to his own tribe and clan, each to his own inheritance.

25В те дни не было царя у Израиля. Каждый делал то, что ему казалось справедливым.In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
