Abraham Justified by Faith (Genesis 15:1–7; Psalm 32:1–11; Hebrews 11:8–19)
TNT What shall we saye then that Abraham oure father as pertayninge to the flesshe dyd finde? BSB BSB: What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has discovered?
TNT If Abraham were iustified by dedes the hath he wherin to reioyce: but not with god. BSB BSB: If Abraham was indeed justified by works, he had something to boast about, but not before God.
TNT To him that worketh is the rewarde not reckened of favour: but of duty. BSB BSB: Now the wages of the worker are not credited as a gift, but as an obligation.
TNT To him that worketh not but beleveth on him that iustifieth the vngodly is his fayth counted for rightewesnes. BSB BSB: However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.
TNT Even as David describeth the blessedfulnes of the man vnto whom god ascribeth rightewesnes without dedes. BSB BSB: And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
TNT Blessed are they whose vnrightewesnes are forgeven and whose synnes are covered. BSB BSB: “Blessed are they whose lawless acts are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
TNT Blessed is that man to whom the Lorde imputeth not synne. BSB BSB: Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”
TNT Came this blessednes then vpon the circumcised or vpon the vncircumcised? We saye verely how that fayth was rekened to Abraham for rightewesnes. BSB BSB: Is this blessing only on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.
TNT How was it rekened? in the tyme of circumcision? or in the tyme before he was circumcised? Not in tyme of circucision: but when he was yet vncircumcised. BSB BSB: In what context was it credited? Was it after his circumcision, or before? It was not after, but before.
TNT And he receaved the signe of circumcision as a seale of that rightewesnes which is by fayth which fayth he had yet beynge vncircumcised: that he shuld be the father of all them that beleve though they be not circumcised that rightewesnes myght be imputed to them also: BSB BSB: And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.
TNT and that he myght be the father of the circumcised not because they are circumcised only: but because they walke also in the steppes of that fayth that was in oure father Abraham before the tyme of circumcision. BSB BSB: And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
Abraham Receives the Promise (Genesis 15:8–21)
TNT For the promes that he shuld be the heyre of the worlde was not geven to Abraham or to his seed thorow the lawe: but thorow the rightewesnes which cometh of fayth. BSB BSB: For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world was not given through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
TNT For yf they which are of the lawe be heyres then is fayth but vayne and the promes of none effecte. BSB BSB: For if those who live by the law are heirs, faith is useless and the promise is worthless,
TNT Because the lawe causeth wrathe. For where no lawe is there is no trasgression. BSB BSB: because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression.
TNT Therfore by fayth is the inheritaunce geven that it myght come of faveour: and the promes myght be sure to all the seed. Not to them only which are of the lawe: but also to them which are of the fayth of Abraham which is the father of vs all. BSB BSB: Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
TNT As it is wrytten: I have made the a father to many nacions even before god whom thou hast beleved which quyckeneth the deed and called those thinges which be not as though they were. BSB BSB: As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist.
TNT Which Abraham contrary to hope beleved in hope that he shuld be the father of many nacions accordynge to that which was spoken: So shall thy seed be. BSB BSB: Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”
TNT And he faynted not in the fayth nor yet consydered hys awne body which was now deed even when he was almost an hondred yeare olde: nether yet that Sara was past chyldeberinge. BSB BSB: Without weakening in his faith, he acknowledged the decrepitness of his body (since he was about a hundred years old) and the lifelessness of Sarah’s womb.
TNT He stackered not at the promes of God thorow vnbelefe: but was made stronge in the fayth and gave honour to God BSB BSB: Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,
TNT full certifyed that what he had promised that he was able to make good. BSB BSB: being fully persuaded that God was able to do what He had promised.
TNT And therfore was it reckened to him for rightewesnes. BSB BSB: This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”
TNT It is not written for him only that it was reckened to him for rightewesnes: BSB BSB: Now the words “it was credited to him” were written not only for Abraham,
TNT but also for vs to whom it shalbe counted for rightewesnes so we beleve on him that raysed vp Iesus oure Lorde from deeth. BSB BSB: but also for us, to whom righteousness will be credited—for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
TNT Which was delivered for oure synnes and rose agayne forto iustifie vs. BSB BSB: He was delivered over to death for our trespasses and was raised to life for our justification.
