WBS And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody to the next day: for it was now evening. BSB BSB: They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in custody until the next day.
WBS But many of them who heard the word, believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. BSB BSB: But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.
WBS And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, BSB BSB: The next day the rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,
WBS And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were assembled at Jerusalem. BSB BSB: along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and many others from the high priest’s family.
WBS And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name have ye done this? BSB BSB: They had Peter and John brought in and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
WBS Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, BSB BSB: Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!
WBS If we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made sound. BSB BSB: If we are being examined today about a kind service to a man who was lame, to determine how he was healed,
WBS Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you sound. BSB BSB: then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
WBS This is the stone which was set at naught by you builders, which is become the head of the corner. BSB BSB: This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
The Name Forbidden 13 WBS Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. BSB BSB: When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus.
WBS And beholding the man who was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. BSB BSB: And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in response.
WBS But when they had commanded them to withdraw from the council, they conferred among themselves, BSB BSB: So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
WBS Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it . BSB BSB: “What shall we do with these men?” they asked. “It is clear to everyone living in Jerusalem that a remarkable miracle has occurred through them, and we cannot deny it.
WBS But that it may spread no further among the people, let us strictly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. BSB BSB: But to keep this message from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in this name.”
WBS And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus. BSB BSB: Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
WBS But Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye. BSB BSB: But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.
WBS For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. BSB BSB: For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
WBS So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. BSB BSB: After further threats they let them go. They could not find a way to punish them, because all the people were glorifying God for what had happened.
WBS For the man was above forty years old on whom this miracle of healing was performed. BSB BSB: For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers’ Prayer (Psalm 2:1–12)
WBS And being dismissed, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. BSB BSB: On their release, Peter and John returned to their own people and reported everything that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
WBS And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, who hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that is in them; BSB BSB: When the believers heard this, they lifted up their voices to God with one accord. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “You made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.
WBS Who, by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? BSB BSB: You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
WBS The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were assembled against the Lord, and against his Christ. BSB BSB: The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One.’
WBS To do whatever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. BSB BSB: They carried out what Your hand and will had decided beforehand would happen.
WBS And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant to thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, BSB BSB: And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,
WBS By stretching forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. BSB BSB: as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”
WBS And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. BSB BSB: After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
