Unity in the Body (Psalm 133:1–3; 1 Corinthians 1:10–17)
WBS With all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; BSB BSB: with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
WBS One Lord, one faith, one baptism, BSB BSB: one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
WBS One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. BSB BSB: one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
WBS But to every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. BSB BSB: Now to each one of us grace has been given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
WBS Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men. BSB BSB: This is why it says: “When He ascended on high, He led captives away, and gave gifts to men.”
WBS Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? BSB BSB: What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth?
WBS He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. BSB BSB: He who descended is the very One who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things.
WBS And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; BSB BSB: And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
WBS For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: BSB BSB: to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ,
WBS Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: BSB BSB: until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.
WBS That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive: BSB BSB: Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming.
WBS But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, who is the head, even Christ: BSB BSB: Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head.
WBS From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body to the edifying of itself in love. BSB BSB: From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.
New Life in Christ (Colossians 3:1–17)
WBS This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, BSB BSB: So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.
WBS Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: BSB BSB: They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.
WBS Who being past feeling have given themselves over to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. BSB BSB: Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity, with a craving for more.
WBS But ye have not so learned Christ; BSB BSB: But this is not the way you came to know Christ.
WBS If indeed ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: BSB BSB: Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him—in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus—
WBS That ye put off concerning the former manner of life the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts: BSB BSB: to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
WBS And be renewed in the Spirit of your mind; BSB BSB: to be renewed in the spirit of your minds;
WBS And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. BSB BSB: and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
WBS Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. BSB BSB: Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another.
WBS Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: BSB BSB: “Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger,
WBS Neither give place to the devil. BSB BSB: and do not give the devil a foothold.
WBS Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. BSB BSB: He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need.
WBS Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers. BSB BSB: Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.
WBS And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed to the day of redemption. BSB BSB: And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
WBS Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil-speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: BSB BSB: Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice.
WBS And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. BSB BSB: Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
