The Serpent’s Deception (Romans 5:12–21)
2 WBS And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: BSB BSB: The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3 WBS But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. BSB BSB: but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
4 WBS And the serpent said to the woman, Ye shall not surely die: BSB BSB: “You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman.
5 WBS For God doth know, that in the day ye eat of it, then your eyes shall be opened: and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. BSB BSB: “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 WBS And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise; she took of its fruit, and ate, and gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. BSB BSB: When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
7 WBS And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked: and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made for themselves aprons. BSB BSB: And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.
God Arraigns Adam and Eve 9 WBS And the LORD God called to Adam, and said to him, Where art thou? BSB BSB: But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
10 WBS And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden: and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. BSB BSB: “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
11 WBS And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, that thou shouldest not eat? BSB BSB: “Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 WBS And the man said, The woman, whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate. BSB BSB: And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 WBS And the LORD God said to the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I ate. BSB BSB: Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”
The Fate of the Serpent 14 WBS And the LORD God said to the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field: upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: BSB BSB: So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
15 WBS And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. BSB BSB: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
The Punishment of Mankind 16 WBS To the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children: and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. BSB BSB: To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
18 WBS Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; BSB BSB: Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 WBS In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou shalt return to the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art , and to dust shalt thou return. BSB BSB: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
20 WBS And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. BSB BSB: And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living.
The Expulsion from Paradise 21 WBS For Adam also and for his wife the LORD God made coats of skins, and clothed them. BSB BSB: And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
22 WBS And the LORD God said, Behold, the man hath become as one of us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he should put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: BSB BSB: Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
23 WBS Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. BSB BSB: Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24 WBS So he drove out the man: and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. BSB BSB: So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
