The Death of Lazarus 1 WBS Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. BSB BSB: At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
WBS (It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) BSB BSB: (Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet with her hair.)
WBS Therefore his sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. BSB BSB: So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick.”
WBS When Jesus heard that , he said, This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. BSB BSB: When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
WBS Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. BSB BSB: Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
WBS When therefore he had heard that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. BSB BSB: So on hearing that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days,
WBS Then after that he saith to his disciples, Let us ho into Judea again. BSB BSB: and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
WBS His disciples say to him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?BSB BSB: “Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there?”
WBS Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walketh in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world.
WBS But if a man walketh in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. BSB BSB: But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.”
WBS These things he said: and after that he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. BSB BSB: After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”
WBS Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleepeth he will do well. BSB BSB: His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.”
WBS Now Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking rest in sleep. BSB BSB: They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.
WBS Then said Jesus to them plainly, Lazarus is dead. BSB BSB: So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
WBS And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless, let us go to him. BSB BSB: and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
WBS Then said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. BSB BSB: Then Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”
Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary 17 WBS Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. BSB BSB: When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.
WBS (Now Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs distant.) BSB BSB: Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away,
WBS And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. BSB BSB: and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them in the loss of their brother.
WBS Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat in the house. BSB BSB: So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home.
WBS Then said Martha to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. BSB BSB: Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
WBS But I know that even now, whatever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. BSB BSB: But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask of Him.”
WBS Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again. BSB BSB: “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
WBS Martha saith to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. BSB BSB: Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
WBS Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.
WBS And whoever liveth, and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this? BSB BSB: And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
WBS She saith to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
WBS And when she had so said, she went and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. BSB BSB: After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.”
WBS As soon as she heard that , she arose quickly, and came to him. BSB BSB: And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.
WBS Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. BSB BSB: Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.
WBS The Jews then who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose hastily, and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth to the grave to weep there. BSB BSB: When the Jews who were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
WBS Then when Mary had come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. BSB BSB: When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
WBS And said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see. BSB BSB: “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they answered.
WBS Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! BSB BSB: Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
WBS And some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? BSB BSB: But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus (Acts 9:36–43)
WBS Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. BSB BSB: Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
WBS Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, by this time his body is offensive: for he hath been dead four days. BSB BSB: “Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.”
WBS Jesus saith to her, Said I not to thee, that if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
WBS Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me: BSB BSB: So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
WBS And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people who stand by, I said it , that they may believe that thou hast sent me. BSB BSB: I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.”
WBS And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. BSB BSB: After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
WBS And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go. BSB BSB: The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth. “Unwrap him and let him go,” Jesus told them.
The Plot to Kill Jesus (Matthew 26:1–5; Mark 14:1–2; Luke 22:1–2)
WBS Then many of the Jews who came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. BSB BSB: Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him.
WBS But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. BSB BSB: But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
WBS Then the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and said, What do we? for this man performeth many miracles. BSB BSB: Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs.
WBS If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation. BSB BSB: If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
WBS And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all, BSB BSB: But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
WBS Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. BSB BSB: You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
WBS And this he spoke not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; BSB BSB: Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,
WBS And not for that nation only, but that also he should assemble in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. BSB BSB: and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one.
WBS Then from that day forth they took counsel together to put him to death. BSB BSB: So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.
WBS Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence to a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. BSB BSB: As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. And He stayed there with the disciples.
WBS And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. BSB BSB: Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover.
WBS Then they sought for Jesus, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? BSB BSB: They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? Will He come to the feast at all?”
WBS Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it , that they might take him. BSB BSB: But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
