The Betrayal of Jesus (Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; Luke 22:47–53)
WBS When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples. BSB BSB: After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden.
WBS And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often resorted thither with his disciples. BSB BSB: Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.
WBS Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, and weapons. BSB BSB: So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
WBS Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth, and said to them, Whom seek ye? BSB BSB: Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Whom are you seeking?”
WBS They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them, I am he . And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them. BSB BSB: “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.
WBS As soon then as he had said to them, I am he , they went backward, and fell to the ground. BSB BSB: When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
WBS Then he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. BSB BSB: So He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.
WBS Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he : If therefore ye seek me, let these go away: BSB BSB: “I told you that I am He,” Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for Me, let these men go.”
WBS That the saying might be fulfilled which he spoke, Of them whom thou gavest to me, I have lost none. BSB BSB: This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”
WBS Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. BSB BSB: Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
WBS Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? BSB BSB: “Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”
WBS Then the band, and the captain, and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, BSB BSB: Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him.
WBS Now Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. BSB BSB: Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people.
Peter’s First Denial (Matthew 26:69–70; Mark 14:66–68; Luke 22:54–57)
WBS And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. BSB BSB: Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
WBS But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple who was known to the high priest, and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. BSB BSB: But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
WBS Then saith the damsel that kept the door to Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. BSB BSB: At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.
WBS And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; (for it was cold) and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. BSB BSB: Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.
Jesus before the High Priest (Matthew 26:57–68; Mark 14:53–65; Luke 22:66–71)
WBS The high priest then asked Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his doctrine. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
WBS Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. BSB BSB: “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
WBS Why dost thou ask me? ask them who heard me, what I have said to them: behold, they know what I have said. BSB BSB: Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said.”
WBS And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers who stood by, struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? BSB BSB: When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”
WBS Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear testimony of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”
WBS (Now Annas had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.) BSB BSB: Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials (Matthew 26:71–75; Mark 14:69–72; Luke 22:58–62)
WBS And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore to him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it , and said, I am not. BSB BSB: Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
WBS One of the servants of the high priest (being the kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off) saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? BSB BSB: One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”
WBS Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crowed. BSB BSB: Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Jesus before Pilate (Matthew 27:11–14; Luke 23:1–5)
WBS Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment-hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. BSB BSB: Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.
WBS Pilate then went out to them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? BSB BSB: So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”
WBS They answered and said to him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee. BSB BSB: “If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”
WBS Then said Pilate to them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: BSB BSB: “You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.
WBS That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die. BSB BSB: This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.
WBS Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing from thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me? BSB BSB: “Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”
WBS Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee to me: What hast thou done? BSB BSB: “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”
WBS Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou a King then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a King. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. BSB BSB: “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”
WBS Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find in him no fault. BSB BSB: “What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.
WBS But ye have a custom that I should release to you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release to you the King of the Jews? BSB BSB: But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
WBS Then they all cried again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. BSB BSB: “Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)
