The Pool of Bethesda 1 WBS After this there was a feast of the Jews: and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. BSB BSB: Some time later there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
WBS In these lay a great multitude of impotent persons, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. BSB BSB: On these walkways lay a great number of the sick, the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed.
WBS For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and agitated the water: whoever then first after the stirring of the water stepped in, was cured of whatever disease he had. BSB BSB: Not in the BSB
WBS And a certain man was there, who had an infirmity thirty and eight years. BSB BSB: One man there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
WBS When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case , he saith to him, Wilt thou be healed? BSB BSB: When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
WBS The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is agitated, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am on my way, someone else goes in before me.”
WBS Jesus saith to him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. BSB BSB: Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”
WBS And immediately the man was healed, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. BSB BSB: Immediately the man was made well, and he picked up his mat and began to walk. Now this happened on the Sabbath day,
WBS The Jews therefore said to him that was cured, it is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. BSB BSB: so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath! It is unlawful for you to carry your mat.”
WBS He answered them, He that healed me, the same said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. BSB BSB: But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
WBS Then they asked him, What man is that who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? BSB BSB: “Who is this man who told you to pick it up and walk?” they asked.
WBS And he that was healed knew not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. BSB BSB: But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while the crowd was there.
WBS Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art cured: sin no more, lest a worse thing come to thee. BSB BSB: Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.”
WBS The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. BSB BSB: And the man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Father and the Son 16 WBS And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath. BSB BSB: Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews began to persecute Him.
WBS But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. BSB BSB: But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.”
WBS Then answered Jesus, and said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son can do nothing by himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for whatever things he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. BSB BSB: So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
WBS For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. BSB BSB: The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these.
WBS For as the Father raiseth the dead, and reviveth them ; even so the Son reviveth whom he will. BSB BSB: For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.
WBS For the Father judgeth no man; but hath committed all judgment to the Son: BSB BSB: Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son,
WBS That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son, honoreth not the Father who hath sent him. BSB BSB: so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
WBS Verily, verily, I say to you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but hath passed from death to life. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.
WBS Verily, verily, I say to you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
WBS For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; BSB BSB: For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.
WBS And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. BSB BSB: And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
WBS And shall come forth; they that have done good to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation. BSB BSB: and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
WBS I can of my own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who hath sent me. BSB BSB: I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Testimonies about Jesus 31 WBS If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true. BSB BSB: If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.
WBS There is another that testifieth concerning me, and I know that the testimony which he beareth concerning me is true. BSB BSB: There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that His testimony about Me is valid.
WBS Ye sent to John, and he testified to the truth. BSB BSB: You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
WBS But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye may be saved. BSB BSB: Even though I do not accept human testimony, I say these things so that you may be saved.
WBS He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. BSB BSB: John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light.
WBS But I have greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear testimony concerning me, that the Father hath sent me. BSB BSB: But I have testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me that the Father has sent Me.
WBS And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath borne testimony concerning me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. BSB BSB: And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form,
WBS And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. BSB BSB: nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe the One He sent.
The Witness of Scripture (Luke 16:19–31)
WBS Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. BSB BSB: You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me,
WBS And ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. BSB BSB: yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.
WBS I receive not honor from men. BSB BSB: I do not accept glory from men,
WBS But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. BSB BSB: but I know you, that you do not have the love of God within you.
WBS I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. BSB BSB: I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not received Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will receive him.
WBS How can ye believe, who receive honor one from another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only? BSB BSB: How can you believe if you accept glory from one another, yet do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
WBS Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. BSB BSB: Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, in whom you have put your hope.
WBS But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? BSB BSB: But since you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”
