The Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17)
WBS After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. BSB BSB: After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias).
WBS And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he performed on them that were diseased. BSB BSB: A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick.
WBS And Jesus went upon a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. BSB BSB: Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.
WBS And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. BSB BSB: Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.
WBS When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come to him, he saith to Philip, Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? BSB BSB: When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?”
WBS (And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.) BSB BSB: But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
WBS Philip answered him, Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them make take a little: BSB BSB: Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”
WBS One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith to him, BSB BSB: One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
WBS There is a lad here, who hath five barley-loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? BSB BSB: “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
WBS And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. (Now there was much grass in the place.) So the men sat down in number about five thousand. BSB BSB: “Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
WBS And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes, as much as they would. BSB BSB: Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.
WBS When they were satisfied, he said to his disciples, Gather the fragments that remain, that nothing may be lost. BSB BSB: And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”
WBS Therefore they gathered them , and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. BSB BSB: So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
WBS When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again to a mountain himself alone. BSB BSB: Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.
Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22–33; Mark 6:45–52)
WBS And when evening had now come, his disciples went down to the sea, BSB BSB: When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
WBS And entered into a boat, and went over the sea towards Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them. BSB BSB: got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.
WBS And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. BSB BSB: A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
WBS So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh to the boat: and they were afraid. BSB BSB: When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified.
WBS But he saith to them, It is I; be not afraid. BSB BSB: But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”
WBS Then they willingly received him into the boat: and immediately the boat was at the land whither they were going. BSB BSB: Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
Jesus the Bread of Life 22 WBS The day following, when the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save that one into which his disciples had entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone; BSB BSB: The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.
WBS (Yet there came other boats from Tiberias nigh to the place where they ate bread, after the Lord had given thanks:) BSB BSB: However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
WBS When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. BSB BSB: So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.
WBS And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? BSB BSB: When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
WBS Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were satisfied. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
WBS Labor not for the food which perisheth, but for that food which endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give to you: for him hath God the Father sealed. BSB BSB: Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”
WBS Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? BSB BSB: Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”
WBS Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”
WBS They said therefore to him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? BSB BSB: So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?
WBS Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. BSB BSB: Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
WBS Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
WBS For the bread of God is he who cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world. BSB BSB: For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
WBS Then said they to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. BSB BSB: “Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.”
WBS And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me, shall never thirst. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.
WBS But I said to you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. BSB BSB: But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.
WBS And this is the Father's will who hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. BSB BSB: And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.
WBS And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. BSB BSB: For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”
WBS The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. BSB BSB: At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
WBS And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? BSB BSB: They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
WBS Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves. BSB BSB: “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus replied.
WBS No man can come to me, except the Father who hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. BSB BSB: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
WBS It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught from God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned from the Father, cometh to me. BSB BSB: It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me—
WBS Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he who is from God, he hath seen the Father. BSB BSB: not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.
WBS Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
WBS I am that bread of life. BSB BSB: I am the bread of life.
WBS Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and are dead. BSB BSB: Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
WBS This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat of it, and not die. BSB BSB: This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
WBS I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man shall eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. BSB BSB: I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.”
WBS The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? BSB BSB: At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”
WBS Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. BSB BSB: So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.
WBS Whoever eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. BSB BSB: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
WBS For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. BSB BSB: For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.
WBS He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. BSB BSB: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.
WBS As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. BSB BSB: Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
WBS This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers ate manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. BSB BSB: This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever.”
Many Disciples Turn Back (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33)
WBS Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this , said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it? BSB BSB: On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?”
WBS When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said to them, Doth this offend you? BSB BSB: Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you?
WBS What if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?BSB BSB: Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?
WBS It is the spirit that reviveth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life. BSB BSB: The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
WBS But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who he was that would betray him. BSB BSB: However, there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.)
WBS And he said, Therefore I said to you, that no man can come to me, except it were given to him by my Father. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.”
Peter’s Confession of Faith (Matthew 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20)
WBS Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will ye also go away? BSB BSB: So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”
WBS Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. BSB BSB: Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
WBS And we believe, and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. BSB BSB: We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
WBS Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
WBS He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was he that was to betray him, being one of the twelve. BSB BSB: He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.
