Jesus Teaches at the Feast 1 WBS After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. BSB BSB: After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
WBS Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. BSB BSB: However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
WBS His brethren therefore said to him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. BSB BSB: So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
WBS For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, show thyself to the world. BSB BSB: For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”
WBS Then Jesus said to them, My time is not yet come: but your time is always ready. BSB BSB: Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
WBS The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify concerning it, that its works are evil. BSB BSB: The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.
WBS Go ye up to this feast: I go not yet to this feast, for my time is not yet full come. BSB BSB: Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
WBS When he had said these words to them, he abode still in Galilee. BSB BSB: Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.
WBS But when his brethren had gone up, then he went also to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. BSB BSB: But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
WBS Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? BSB BSB: So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
WBS And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, No; but he deceiveth the people. BSB BSB: Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
WBS Yet, no man spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews. BSB BSB: Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
WBS Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. BSB BSB: About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
WBS Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. BSB BSB: “My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
WBS If any man will do his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God, or whether I speak from myself. BSB BSB: If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
WBS He that speaketh from himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. BSB BSB: He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.
WBS Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? BSB BSB: Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
WBS The people answered and said, Thou hast a demon: who goeth about to kill thee? BSB BSB: “You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
WBS Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
WBS Moses therefore gave to you circumcision, (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers) and ye on the sabbath circumcise a man. BSB BSB: But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
WBS If a man on the sabbath receiveth circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have restored a man to sound health on the sabbath? BSB BSB: If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
WBS Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. BSB BSB: Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
Is Jesus the Christ? 25 WBS Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he whom they seek to kill? BSB BSB: Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
WBS But lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing to him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? BSB BSB: Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
WBS But we know this man, whence he is: whereas when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. BSB BSB: But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
WBS Then cried Jesus in the temple, as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. BSB BSB: Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
WBS But I know him; for I am from him, and he hath sent me. BSB BSB: but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
WBS Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. BSB BSB: So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
WBS And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done? BSB BSB: Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
WBS The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him: and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. BSB BSB: When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
WBS Then said Jesus to them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go to him that sent me. BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
WBS Ye will seek me, and will not find me : and where I am, thither ye cannot come. BSB BSB: You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
WBS Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go to the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? BSB BSB: At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
WBS What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye will seek me, and will not find me : and where I am, thither ye cannot come? BSB BSB: What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
Living Water 37 WBS In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirsteth, let him come to me, and drink. BSB BSB: On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
WBS He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. BSB BSB: Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”
WBS (But this he spoke of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive, for the Holy Spirit was not yet given , because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) BSB BSB: He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Division over Jesus 40 WBS Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, In truth this is the Prophet. BSB BSB: On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
WBS Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Will Christ come out of Galilee? BSB BSB: Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
WBS Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh from the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? BSB BSB: Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
WBS So there was a division among the people because of him. BSB BSB: So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
WBS And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. BSB BSB: Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders 45 WBS Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him? BSB BSB: Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
WBS The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man. BSB BSB: “Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
WBS Then the Pharisees answered them, Are ye also deceived? BSB BSB: “Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
WBS Have any of the rulers, or of the Pharisees believed on him? BSB BSB: “Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
WBS But this people who know not the law are cursed. BSB BSB: But this crowd that does not know the law—they are under a curse.”
WBS Nicodemus saith to them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them) BSB BSB: Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
WBS Doth our law judge any man before it heareth him, and knoweth what he doeth? BSB BSB: “Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
WBS They answered and said to him, Art thou also from Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. BSB BSB: “Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
