The Lord of the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Mark 2:23–28)
WBS And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through corn-fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and ate, rubbing them in their hands. BSB BSB: One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them.

WBS How he went into the house of God, and took and ate the show-bread, and gave also to them that were with him, which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? BSB BSB: He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread and gave it to his companions, and ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat.”
WBS And he said to them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:9–14; Mark 3:1–6)

WBS And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find an accusation against him. BSB BSB: Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath.
WBS But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose, and stood forth. BSB BSB: But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand among us.” So he got up and stood there.
WBS Then said Jesus to them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it ? BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
WBS And looking around upon them all, he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. BSB BSB: And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and it was restored.
WBS And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. BSB BSB: But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

WBS Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon called Zelotes, BSB BSB: Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot;
WBS And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also was the traitor. BSB BSB: Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Heals the Multitudes (Matthew 4:23–25; Mark 3:7–12)
WBS And he came down with them, and stood in the plain; and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea-coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; BSB BSB: Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.
WBS And they that were afflicted with unclean spirits: and they were healed. BSB BSB: They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed.
WBS And the whole multitude sought to touch him; for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. BSB BSB: The entire crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all.
The Beatitudes (Psalm 1:1–6; Matthew 5:3–12)
WBS And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. BSB BSB: Looking up at His disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
WBS Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. BSB BSB: Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
WBS Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company , and shall reproach you , and cast out your name as evil, on account of the son of man. BSB BSB: Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
WBS Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers to the prophets. BSB BSB: Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way.
Woes to the Satisfied (Amos 6:1–7)
WBS But woe to you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. BSB BSB: But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
WBS Woe to you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe to you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. BSB BSB: Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
WBS Woe to you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. BSB BSB: Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way.
Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:38–48)
WBS But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to them who hate you, BSB BSB: But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
WBS Bless them that curse you, and pray for them who despitefully use you. BSB BSB: bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
WBS And to him that smiteth thee on the one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke, forbid not to take thy coat also. BSB BSB: If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well.
WBS Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again. BSB BSB: Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back.
WBS And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. BSB BSB: Do to others as you would have them do to you.
WBS For if ye love them who love you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. BSB BSB: If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
WBS And if ye do good to them who do good to you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also do even the same. BSB BSB: If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
WBS And if ye lend to them from whom ye hope to receive, what thanks have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much in return. BSB BSB: And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.
WBS But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. BSB BSB: But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
WBS Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. BSB BSB: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judging Others (Matthew 7:1–6; Romans 14:1–12)
WBS Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: BSB BSB: Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
WBS Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye give to others , it shall be measured to you again. BSB BSB: Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
WBS And he spoke a parable to them; Can the blind lead the blind? will they not both fall into the ditch? BSB BSB: Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
WBS The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect, shall be as his master. BSB BSB: A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
WBS And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thy own eye? BSB BSB: Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
WBS Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thy eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thy own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thy own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. BSB BSB: How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit (Matthew 7:15–23; Matthew 12:33–37)
WBS For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. BSB BSB: No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
WBS For every tree is known by its own fruit: for from thorns men do not gather figs, nor from a bramble bush do they gather grapes. BSB BSB: For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.
WBS A good man out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil: for from the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. BSB BSB: The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
The House on the Rock (Matthew 7:24–27)
WBS And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? BSB BSB: Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?
WBS Whoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like. BSB BSB: I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them:
WBS He is like a man who built a house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. BSB BSB: He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
WBS But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that, without a foundation, built a house on the earth, against which the stream beat vehemently, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great. BSB BSB: But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!”
