The Faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5–13; John 4:43–54)
WBS Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. BSB BSB: When Jesus had concluded His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
WBS And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear to him, was sick, and ready to die. BSB BSB: There a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick and about to die.
WBS And when he heard of Jesus, he sent to him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. BSB BSB: When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask Him to come and heal his servant.
WBS And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: BSB BSB: They came to Jesus and pleaded with Him earnestly, “This man is worthy to have You grant this,
WBS Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof; BSB BSB: So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.
WBS Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come to thee; but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. BSB BSB: That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
WBS For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it . BSB BSB: For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes, and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”
WBS When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned himself about and said to the people that followed him, I say to you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. BSB BSB: When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
WBS And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well that had been sick. BSB BSB: And when the messengers returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son 11 WBS And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain: and many of his disciples went with him, and many people. BSB BSB: Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
WBS Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and many people of the city were with her. BSB BSB: As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
WBS And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, Weep not. BSB BSB: When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.”
WBS And he came and touched the bier: And they that bore him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say to thee, Arise. BSB BSB: Then He went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up!”
WBS And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak, and he delivered him to his mother. BSB BSB: And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.
WBS And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet hath risen among us; and, That God hath visited his people. BSB BSB: A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!”
WBS And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the neighboring region. BSB BSB: And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.
John’s Inquiry (Matthew 11:1–6)
WBS And the disciples of John informed him of all these things. BSB BSB: Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things.
WBS And John calling two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? BSB BSB: So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
WBS When the men had come to him, they said, John the Baptist hath sent us to thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? BSB BSB: When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’”
WBS And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities, and diseases, and of evil spirits; and to many that were blind he gave sight. BSB BSB: At that very hour Jesus healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.
WBS Then Jesus answering, said to them, Go, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; that the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. BSB BSB: So He replied, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
WBS And blessed is he , to whom I shall not be a stumbling block. BSB BSB: Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
Jesus Testifies about John (Malachi 3:1–5; Matthew 11:7–19)
WBS And when the messengers of John had departed, he began to speak to the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? BSB BSB: After John’s messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
WBS But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they who are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. BSB BSB: Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces.
WBS But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet. BSB BSB: What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
WBS This is he , concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. BSB BSB: This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
WBS For I say to you, Among those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God, is greater than he. BSB BSB: I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
WBS And all the people that heard him , and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. BSB BSB: All the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice. For they had received the baptism of John.
WBS But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him. BSB BSB: But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.
WBS And the Lord said, To what then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? BSB BSB: “To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like?
WBS They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. BSB BSB: They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
WBS For John the Baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon. BSB BSB: For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’
WBS The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. BSB BSB: The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
WBS But wisdom is justified by all her children. BSB BSB: But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus (Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:1–8)
WBS And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down at table. BSB BSB: Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
WBS And behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster-box of ointment, BSB BSB: When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.
WBS And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. BSB BSB: As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and wipe them with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the perfume.
WBS Now when the Pharisee who had invited him, saw it , he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who, and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, for she is a sinner. BSB BSB: When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him—for she is a sinner!”
WBS And Jesus answering, said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he saith, Master, speak. BSB BSB: But Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, Teacher,” he said.
WBS There was a certain creditor, who had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. BSB BSB: “Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
WBS And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? BSB BSB: When they were unable to repay him, he forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more?”
WBS Simon answered and said, I suppose that he , to whom he forgave most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged. BSB BSB: “I suppose the one who was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
WBS And he turned to the woman, and said to Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. BSB BSB: And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
WBS Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. BSB BSB: You did not greet Me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing My feet since I arrived.
WBS My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. BSB BSB: You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.
WBS Wherefore I say to thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. BSB BSB: Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she has loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”
WBS And he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
WBS And they that sat at table with him, began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? BSB BSB: But those at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
WBS And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. BSB BSB: And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
