WBS I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: BSB BSB: “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat.
WBS And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for some of them came from a distance. BSB BSB: If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a great distance.”
WBS And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? BSB BSB: His disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could anyone find enough bread to feed all these people?”
WBS And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. BSB BSB: “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
WBS And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and broke, and gave to his disciples to set before them ; and they set them before the people. BSB BSB: And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves, gave thanks and broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And they distributed them to the crowd.
WBS And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them . BSB BSB: They also had a few small fish, and Jesus blessed them and ordered that these be set before them as well.
WBS So they ate, and were satisfied: and they took up of the fragments that were left, seven baskets. BSB BSB: The people ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
WBS And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he dismissed them. BSB BSB: And about four thousand men were present. And when Jesus had dismissed the crowd,
WBS And forthwith he entered into a boat with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. BSB BSB: He immediately got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
The Demand for a Sign (Matthew 16:1–4; Luke 12:54–56)
WBS And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him. BSB BSB: Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, testing Him by demanding from Him a sign from heaven.
WBS And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek for a sign? Verily I say to you, There shall no sign be given to this generation. BSB BSB: Jesus sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
WBS And he left them, and entering into the boat again, departed to the other side. BSB BSB: And He left them, got back into the boat, and crossed to the other side.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod (Matthew 16:5–12; Luke 12:1–3)
WBS Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the boat with them more than one loaf. BSB BSB: Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
WBS And he charged them saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. BSB BSB: “Watch out!” He cautioned them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod.”
WBS And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. BSB BSB: So they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.
WBS And when Jesus knew it , he saith to them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? BSB BSB: Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts?
WBS Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? BSB BSB: ‘Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember?
WBS When I divided the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say to him, Twelve. BSB BSB: When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Twelve,” they answered.
WBS And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. BSB BSB: “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Seven,” they said.
WBS And he said to them, How is it that ye do not understand? BSB BSB: Then He asked them, “Do you still not understand?”

BSB BSB: So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then He spit on the man’s eyes and placed His hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked.
WBS And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees walking. BSB BSB: The man looked up and said, “I can see the people, but they look like trees walking around.”
WBS After that, he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. BSB BSB: Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.
WBS And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town. BSB BSB: Jesus sent him home and said, “Do not go back into the village.”

BSB BSB: But Jesus, turning and looking at His disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
Take Up Your Cross (Matthew 16:24–28; Luke 9:23–27)
WBS And when he had called the people to him with his disciples also, he said to them, Whoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. BSB BSB: Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples, and He told them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.
WBS For whoever will save his life, shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. BSB BSB: For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the gospel will save it.
WBS For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul: BSB BSB: What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
WBS Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? BSB BSB: Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
WBS Whoever therefore shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also will the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. BSB BSB: If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
