The Ministry of the Twelve (Mark 6:7–13; Luke 9:1–6)
WBS But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. BSB BSB: Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.
WBS And as ye go, proclaim, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. BSB BSB: As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’
WBS Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons: freely ye have received, freely give. BSB BSB: Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
WBS Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses; BSB BSB: Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts.
WBS Nor bag for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor a staff: for the workman is worthy of his food. BSB BSB: Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions.
WBS And into whatever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there abide till ye go thence. BSB BSB: Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.
WBS And when ye come into a house, salute it. BSB BSB: As you enter the home, greet its occupants.
WBS And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. BSB BSB: If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you.
WBS And whoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart from that house, or city, shake off the dust of your feet. BSB BSB: And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.
WBS Verily, I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah, in the day of judgment, than for that city. BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Sheep among Wolves (2 Timothy 1:3–12)
WBS Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. BSB BSB: Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
WBS But beware of men: for they will deliver you to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. BSB BSB: But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.
WBS And ye will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. BSB BSB: On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
WBS But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak, for it shall be given to you in that same hour what ye shall speak. BSB BSB: But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.
WBS For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. BSB BSB: For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
WBS And the brother will deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children will rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. BSB BSB: Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
WBS And ye will be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. BSB BSB: You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
WBS But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say to you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel till the Son of man shall have come. BSB BSB: When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
WBS The disciple is not above his teacher, nor the servant above his lord. BSB BSB: A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
WBS It is enough for the disciple that he should be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord: if they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call them of his household? BSB BSB: It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
Fear God Alone (Luke 12:4–7)
WBS Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. BSB BSB: So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
WBS What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that publish ye upon the house-tops. BSB BSB: What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.
WBS But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. BSB BSB: And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
WBS Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. BSB BSB: So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Confessing Christ (Luke 12:8–12)
WBS But whoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven. BSB BSB: But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.
Not Peace but a Sword (Micah 7:1–6; Luke 12:49–53)
WBS For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. BSB BSB: For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
WBS And a man's foes will be they of his own household. BSB BSB: A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
WBS He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake, shall find it. BSB BSB: Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
The Reward of Service (2 Kings 4:8–17)
WBS He that receiveth you, receiveth me, and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. BSB BSB: He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.
WBS He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward. BSB BSB: Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.
WBS And whoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones, a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily, I say to you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. BSB BSB: And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”
