John’s Inquiry (Luke 7:18–23)
WBS And it came to pass when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. BSB BSB: After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
WBS And said to him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? BSB BSB: to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
WBS Jesus answered and said to them, Go and show John again those things which ye hear and see: BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
WBS The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. BSB BSB: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
WBS And blessed is he to whom I shall not be the cause of his falling into sin. BSB BSB: Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
Jesus Testifies about John (Malachi 3:1–5; Luke 7:24–35)
WBS And as they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind? BSB BSB: As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
WBS But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. BSB BSB: Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces.
WBS But what went ye out to see? A prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. BSB BSB: What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
WBS For this is he concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. BSB BSB: This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
WBS Verily, I say to you, among them that are born of women, there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven, is greater than he. BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
WBS And from the days of John the Baptist, until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. BSB BSB: From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.
WBS For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. BSB BSB: For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
WBS He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. BSB BSB: He who has ears, let him hear.
WBS But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like to children sitting in the markets, and calling to their fellows, BSB BSB: To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
WBS And saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; We have mourned to you, and ye have not lamented. BSB BSB: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
WBS For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon. BSB BSB: For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
WBS The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a man gluttonous, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children. BSB BSB: The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”
Woe to the Unrepentant (Luke 10:13–16)
WBS Then he began to upbraid the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they repented not. BSB BSB: Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
WBS Woe to thee, Chorazin; woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. BSB BSB: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
WBS But I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. BSB BSB: But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
WBS And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. BSB BSB: And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
WBS But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, in the day of judgment, than for thee. BSB BSB: But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Rest for the Weary (Luke 10:21–24)
WBS At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes. BSB BSB: At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
WBS Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight. BSB BSB: Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.
WBS All things are delivered to me by my Father; and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him . BSB BSB: All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
WBS Come to me, all ye that labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. BSB BSB: Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
WBS Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me: for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest to your souls. BSB BSB: Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
WBS For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. BSB BSB: For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
