The Parable of the Workers 2 WBS And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. BSB BSB: He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
WBS And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, BSB BSB: About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
WBS And said to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, I will give you. And they departed. BSB BSB: ‘You also go into my vineyard,’ he said, ‘and I will pay you whatever is right.’
WBS Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. BSB BSB: So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing.
WBS And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith to them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? BSB BSB: About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ he asked.
WBS They say to him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, that shall ye receive. BSB BSB: ‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. So he told them, ‘You also go into my vineyard.’
WBS So when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward, Call the laborers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first. BSB BSB: When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones hired and moving on to the first.’
WBS And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. BSB BSB: The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius.
WBS But when the first came, they supposed that they should receive more; and they likewise received every man a penny. BSB BSB: So when the original workers came, they assumed they would receive more. But each of them also received a denarius.
WBS And when they had received it , they murmured against the master of the house. BSB BSB: On receiving their pay, they began to grumble against the landowner.
WBS Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day. BSB BSB: ‘These men who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.’
WBS But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny? BSB BSB: But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree with me on one denarius?
WBS Take that which is thine, and depart: I will give to this last, even as to thee. BSB BSB: Take your pay and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.
WBS Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? is thy eye evil because I am good? BSB BSB: Do I not have the right to do as I please with what is mine? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
WBS So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen. BSB BSB: So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
The Third Prediction of the Passion (Mark 10:32–34; Luke 18:31–34)
WBS And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said to them, BSB BSB: As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside and said,
WBS Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, BSB BSB: “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death
WBS And will deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him : and the third day he will rise again. BSB BSB: and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. And on the third day He will be raised to life.”
A Mother’s Request (Mark 10:35–45)
WBS Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children, with her sons, worshiping him , and desiring a certain thing of him. BSB BSB: Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and knelt down to make a request of Him.
WBS And he said to her, What wilt thou: She saith to him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left in thy kingdom. BSB BSB: “What do you want?” He inquired. She answered, “Declare that in Your kingdom one of these two sons of mine may sit at Your right hand, and the other at Your left.”
WBS But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say to him, We are able. BSB BSB: “You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” the brothers answered.
WBS And he saith to them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared by my Father. BSB BSB: “You will indeed drink My cup,” Jesus said. “But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom My Father has prepared them.”
WBS And when the ten heard it , they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. BSB BSB: When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
WBS But Jesus called them to him , and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. BSB BSB: But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
WBS But it shall not be so among you: but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; BSB BSB: It shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
WBS And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: BSB BSB: and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave—
WBS Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. BSB BSB: just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
The Blind Men by the Road (Mark 10:46–52; Luke 18:35–43)
WBS And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. BSB BSB: As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.
WBS And behold, two blind men sitting by the way-side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. BSB BSB: And there were two blind men sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
WBS And the multitude rebuked them, that they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. BSB BSB: The crowd admonished them to be silent, but they cried out all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
WBS And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do to you? BSB BSB: Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked.
WBS They say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. BSB BSB: “Lord,” they answered, “let our eyes be opened.”
WBS So Jesus had compassion on them , and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. BSB BSB: Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and at once they received their sight and followed Him.
