The Parable of the Banquet (Luke 14:15–24)
WBS And Jesus answered, and spoke to them again by parables, and said, BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to them in parables:
WBS The kingdom of heaven is like to a certain king, who made a marriage for his son, BSB BSB: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.
WBS And sent his servants to call them that were invited to the wedding: and they would not come. BSB BSB: He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come.
WBS Again, he sent other servants, saying, Tell them who are invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come to the marriage. BSB BSB: Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’
WBS But they made light of it , and went, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. BSB BSB: But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business.
WBS And the remnant took his servants, and treated them spitefully, and slew them . BSB BSB: The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
WBS But when the king heard of it , he was wroth: and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. BSB BSB: The king was enraged, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city.
WBS Then he saith to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they who were invited were not worthy. BSB BSB: Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy.
WBS Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, invite to the marriage. BSB BSB: Go therefore to the crossroads and invite to the banquet as many as you can find.’
WBS So those servants went out into the highways, and collected all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. BSB BSB: So the servants went out into the streets and gathered everyone they could find, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
WBS And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not a wedding-garment: BSB BSB: But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes.
WBS And he saith to him, Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless. BSB BSB: ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless.
WBS Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into utter darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. BSB BSB: Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
WBS For many are called, but few are chosen. BSB BSB: For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Paying Taxes to Caesar (Mark 12:13–17; Luke 20:19–26)
WBS Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. BSB BSB: Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus in His words.
WBS And they sent out to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man : for thou regardest not the person of men. BSB BSB: They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance.
WBS Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not? BSB BSB: So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
WBS But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? BSB BSB: But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?
WBS Show me the tribute-money. And they brought to him a penny. BSB BSB: Show Me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.
WBS And he saith to them, Whose is this image, and superscription? BSB BSB: “Whose image is this,” He asked, “and whose inscription?”
WBS They say to him, Cesar's. Then saith he to them, Render therefore to Cesar, the things which are Cesar's; and to God, the things that are God's. BSB BSB: “Caesar’s,” they answered. So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
WBS When they had heard these words , they marveled, and left him, and departed. BSB BSB: And when they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Mark 12:18–27; Luke 20:27–40)
WBS Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man shall die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. BSB BSB: “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
WBS Now there were with us seven brothers: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased; and having no issue, left his wife to his brother. BSB BSB: Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.
WBS Likewise the second also, and the third, to the seventh. BSB BSB: The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh.
WBS And last of all the woman died also. BSB BSB: And last of all, the woman died.
WBS Therefore in the resurrection, whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. BSB BSB: In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.”
WBS Jesus answered and said to them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
WBS For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. BSB BSB: In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
WBS But as concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying, BSB BSB: But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
WBS And when the multitude heard this , they were astonished at his doctrine. BSB BSB: When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
The Greatest Commandment (Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Mark 12:28–34)
WBS But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were assembled about him. BSB BSB: And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.
WBS Then one of them who was a lawyer, asked him a question , tempting him, and saying, BSB BSB: One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
WBS Master, which is the great commandment in the law? BSB BSB: “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”
WBS Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. BSB BSB: Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
WBS This is the first and great commandment. BSB BSB: This is the first and greatest commandment.
WBS And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. BSB BSB: And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
WBS On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. BSB BSB: All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Whose Son Is the Christ? (Mark 12:35–37; Luke 20:41–44)
WBS While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them, BSB BSB: While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:
WBS Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say to him, The son of David. BSB BSB: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” “David’s,” they answered.
WBS He saith to them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? For he says:
WBS The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thy enemies thy footstool? BSB BSB: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
WBS If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son? BSB BSB: So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?”
WBS And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man , from that day forth, ask him any more questions. BSB BSB: No one was able to answer a word, and from that day on no one dared to question Him any further.
