Giving to the Needy (Deuteronomy 15:7–11)
WBS Therefore, when thou doest thy alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do, in the synagogues, and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Verily, I say to you, they have their reward. BSB BSB: So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
WBS But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: BSB BSB: But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
WBS That thy alms may be in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret, himself will reward thee openly. BSB BSB: so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
The Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1–4)
WBS And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are : for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Verily, I say to you, they have their reward. BSB BSB: And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
WBS But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret, will reward thee openly. BSB BSB: But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
WBS But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. BSB BSB: And when you pray, do not babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard.
WBS Therefore be ye not like them: for your Father knoweth what things ye need before ye ask him. BSB BSB: Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
WBS After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. BSB BSB: So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
WBS Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. BSB BSB: Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
WBS Give us this day our daily bread. BSB BSB: Give us this day our daily bread.
WBS And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. BSB BSB: And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
WBS And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. BSB BSB: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
WBS For, if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: BSB BSB: For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
WBS But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. BSB BSB: But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.
Proper Fasting 16 WBS Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Verily, I say to you, they have their reward. BSB BSB: When you fast, do not be somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
WBS But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face; BSB BSB: But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
WBS That thou mayest not appear to men to fast, but to thy Father, who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. BSB BSB: so that your fasting will not be obvious to men, but only to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Treasures in Heaven (Luke 12:32–34)
WBS Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: BSB BSB: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
WBS But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. BSB BSB: But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
WBS For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. BSB BSB: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
The Lamp of the Body (Luke 11:33–36)
WBS The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light. BSB BSB: The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
WBS But if thy eye be evil, thy whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness! BSB BSB: But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
WBS No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. BSB BSB: No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Do Not Worry (Luke 12:22–31)
WBS Therefore I say to you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment? BSB BSB: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
WBS Which of you by anxious care can add one cubit to his stature? BSB BSB: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
WBS And why are ye anxious for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow? they toil not, neither do they spin? BSB BSB: And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin.
WBS And yet I say to you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. BSB BSB: Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these.
WBS Wherefore, if God so clotheth the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? BSB BSB: If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
WBS Therefore be not anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or, with what shall we be clothed? BSB BSB: Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
WBS (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. BSB BSB: For the Gentiles strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
WBS But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. BSB BSB: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.
WBS Therefore be not anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be solicitous for the things of itself. Sufficient to the day is its own evil. BSB BSB: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.
