Instructions to Elders (1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9)
1 DRA The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech, who am myself also an ancient, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ: as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come: BSB BSB: As a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings, and a partaker of the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you:
2 DRA Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint, but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre’s sake, but voluntarily: BSB BSB: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed, but out of eagerness;
3 DRA Neither as lording it over the clergy, but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart. BSB BSB: not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
4 DRA And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory. BSB BSB: And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
Cast Your Cares on Him 5 DRA In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another, for God resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace. BSB BSB: Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
6 DRA Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation: BSB BSB: Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you.
7 DRA Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you. BSB BSB: Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
8 DRA Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. BSB BSB: Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
9 DRA Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world. BSB BSB: Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.
Benediction and Farewell 10 DRA But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you, and confirm you, and establish you. BSB BSB: And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you.
11 DRA To him be glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen. BSB BSB: To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen.
12 DRA By Sylvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I think, I have written briefly: beseeching and testifying that this is the true grace of God, wherein you stand. BSB BSB: Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
14 DRA Salute one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all you, who are in Christ Jesus. Amen. BSB BSB: Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
