1शाऊल के साथ बात करने के बाद, दाऊद की भेंट शाऊल के पुत्र योनातान से हुई। योनातान को तुरन्त दाऊद पसन्द आया; सच तो यह है की वह उससे प्रेम करने लगा।After David had finished speaking with Saul, the souls of Jonathan and David were knit together, and Jonathan loved him as himself.

2उस दिन से, शाऊल ने दाऊद को उसकी सेवा करने के लिए रखा; उसने उसे घर वापस जाने नहीं दिया।And from that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father’s house.

3क्योंकि योनातान दाऊद से बहुत प्रेम करता था, उसने दाऊद के साथ एक गम्भीर समझौता किया। उन्होंने एक दूसरे को वचन दिया कि वे सदैव मित्र रहेंगे।Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.

4योनातान ने अपना बाहरी वस्त्र उतार कर दाऊद को दे दिया। उसने दाऊद को अपने सैनिक की कटिबन्ध, अपनी तलवार, धनुष और तीर और अपनी कमरबन्ध भी दी।And Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.

5शाऊल दाऊद को जहाँ भी भेजता, वह वहाँ जाता था। और शाऊल ने उसे जो भी करने के लिए कहा, दाऊद ने इसे बहुत सफलतापूर्वक किया। अतः, शाऊल ने दाऊद को सेना में एक सेनापति नियुक्त किया। सेना के सभी अधिकारियों और अन्य पुरुषों ने भी इसको स्वीकार किया।So David marched out and prospered in everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s officers as well.

6परन्तु जब दाऊद ने गोलियत को मार डाला था, और सेना घर लौट रही थी, तब इस्राएली स्त्रियाँ शहरों और नगरों से निकलीं। उन्होंने गाते, नाचते, डफ और वीणा बजाते हुए शाऊल को बधाई दी।As the troops were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments.

7नाचते हुए उन्होंने यह गीत गाया:“शाऊल ने एक हजार शत्रु सैनिकों को मार गिराया, परन्तु दाऊद ने दस हजार को मार गिराया है।”And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”

8जब शाऊल ने उन्हें गाते हुए सुना, तो उसे यह अच्छा नहीं लगा। उसका खून खोल उठा था। उसने मन में कहा,“वे कह रही हैं कि दाऊद ने दस हजार लोगों की हत्या की, परन्तु मैंने केवल एक हजार की हत्या की है। ऐसे तो वे शीघ्र ही उसे अपना राजा बनाना चाहेंगे!”And Saul was furious and resented this song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?”

9उस समय से, शाऊल दाऊद पर विशेष ध्यान रखने लगा क्योंकि उसे सन्देह हो गया था कि दाऊद राजा बनने का प्रयास करेगा।And from that day forward Saul kept a jealous eye on David.

10अगले दिन, परमेश्वर द्वारा भेजी गयी दुष्ट- आत्मा ने अचानक शाऊल को वश में किया। वह अपने घर में एक पागल के सामान व्यवहार करने लगा। दाऊद उसके लिए प्रतिदिन की समान वीणा बजा रहा था। शाऊल ने अपने हाथ में एक भाला पकड़ रखा था,The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house while David played the harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a spear,

11उसने दाऊद पर उससे वार कर दिया, यह सोच कर कि,“मैं दाऊद को भाले के साथ दीवार में जड़ दूँगा!” उसने दो बार ऐसा किया, परन्तु दाऊद दोनों बार बच गया।and he hurled it, thinking, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.

12यह तो स्पष्ट हो गया कि यहोवा ने शाऊल को त्याग दिया था, परन्तु वे दाऊद की सहायता कर रहे थे, शाऊल दाऊद से डरता था।So Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul.

13अतः उसने दाऊद को एक हजार सैनिकों पर सेनापति नियुक्त किया और दाऊद को स्वयं से दूर भेज दिया, वह सोचता था कि दाऊद युद्ध में मारा जाएगा। परन्तु जब दाऊद युद्ध में अपने सैनिकों का नेतृत्व करता था,Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back,

14वह सदैव सफल होता था, क्योंकि यहोवा उसकी सहायता कर रहे थे।and he continued to prosper in all his ways, because the LORD was with him.

15जब शाऊल ने सुना कि दाऊद और उसके सैनिक बहुत सफल हो रहे हैं, तो वह दाऊद से और अधिक डर गया।When Saul saw that David was very successful, he was afraid of him.

16परन्तु इस्राएल और यहूदा के सभी लोग दाऊद से प्रेम करते थे, क्योंकि वह युद्ध में सैनिकों का बहुत सफलतापूर्वक नेतृत्व करता था।But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he was leading them out to battle and back.

17एक दिन शाऊल ने दाऊद से कहा,“यदि तुम यहोवा के लिए पलिश्तियों से युद्ध करते हो तो मैं अपनी बड़ी पुत्री मेरब से तुम्हारा विवाह करूँगा।” उसने ऐसा इसलिए कहा क्योंकि उसने सोचा था,“मैं अपने आप तो दाऊद से छुटकारा पाने प्रयास नहीं करूँगा। यह कार्य मैं पलिश्तियों करने देता हूँ।”Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”

18परन्तु दाऊद ने शाऊल से कहा,“मैं एक महत्वपूर्ण व्यक्ति नहीं हूँ, और मेरा परिवार भी महत्वपूर्ण नहीं है। इसके अतिरिक्त मेरा कुल भी महत्वपूर्ण इस्राएली कुल नहीं है। इसलिए मैं तुम्हारा दामाद बनने के योग्य नहीं हूँ।”And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel, that I should become the son-in-law of the king?”

19जब समय आया की मेरब को दाऊद की पत्नी होने के लिए दिया जाए, तो शाऊल ने उसे महोलाई अद्रीएल नाम के एक व्यक्ति को दे दिया।So when it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.

20शाऊल की दूसरी पुत्री मीकल, दाऊद से प्रेम करती थी। जब शाऊल को उस विषय में बताया गया तो वह प्रसन्न हुआ।Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when this was reported to Saul, it pleased him.

21उसने सोचा,“मैं उसे मीकल दूँगा, कि वह उसे फँसा सके, और पलिश्ती उसे मारने में सक्षम हों।” इसलिए उसने दाऊद से कहा,“तुम मीकल से विवाह कर सकते हो,” और यह कहकर, उसने दूसरी बार संकेत दिया कि दाऊद उसका दामाद बन जाएगा।“I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a snare to him, and the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.”

22शाऊल ने अपने सेवकों से कहा,“दाऊद से निजी तौर पर बात करो, और उससे कहो,‘सुनो, राजा तुमसे प्रसन्न है, और हम सब उसके सेवक तुमसे प्रेम करते हैं। इसलिए अब हम सोचते हैं कि तुमको मीकल से विवाह कर लेना चाहिए और राजा का दामाद बनना चाहिए।’’Then Saul ordered his servants, “Speak to David privately and tell him, ‘Behold, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become his son-in-law.’”

23अतः उन्होंने दाऊद से ऐसी चर्चा की। परन्तु दाऊद ने कहा,“राजा का दामाद बनना बहुत अच्छा सम्मान होगा। परन्तु मेरे विचार से मुझे ऐसा नहीं करना चाहिए, क्योंकि मैं केवल एक गरीब और महत्वहीन व्यक्ति हूँ।”But when Saul’s servants relayed these words to David, he replied, “Does it seem trivial in your sight to be the son-in-law of the king? I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.”

24शाऊल के सेवक ने उसे बताया कि दाऊद ने क्या कहा था।And the servants told Saul what David had said.

25शाऊल ने उत्तर दिया,“जा और दाऊद से कह, मीकल से विवाह करने के लिए तुझे सौ पलिश्तियों को मार कर उनकी खलड़ियाँ काट कर लानी होंगी कि सिद्ध हो कि तूने उन्हें वास्तव में मारा है तब राजा तुझे मीकल से विवाह करने की अनुमति देगा। इस प्रकार वह अपने शत्रुओं से बदला लेगा।’’ परन्तु सच तो यह है कि शाऊल चाहता था कि, ऐसे युद्ध में दाऊद पलिश्तियों के हाथों मारा जाए।Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires no other dowry but a hundred Philistine foreskins as revenge on his enemies.’” But Saul intended to cause David’s death at the hands of the Philistines.

26जब सेवकों ने दाऊद को राजा की बात सुनाई, तो वह बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ कि वह ऐसा करके राजा का दामाद बन सकता था। राजा ने इसके लिए दाऊद को समय दे दिया था।When the servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the wedding day arrived,

27परन्तु समय समाप्त होने से पहले ही दाऊद और उसके लोग आ गए, और एक सौ नहीं, परन्तु दो सौ पलिश्तियों को मारा और उनकी खलड़ियाँ ले कर आए, और शाऊल के देखते हुए उन्हें गिना कि राजा की शर्त पूरी हो और वह शाऊल का दामाद बन सके। अतः शाऊल विवश हो गया कि मीकल का विवाह दाऊद से करे।David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as payment in full to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage.

28परन्तु जब शाऊल को समझ में आया कि यहोवा दाऊद की सहायता कर रहे थे, और उसकी पुत्री दाऊद से प्रेम करती थी,When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,

29वह दाऊद से और अधिक डर गया। अतः जब तक शाऊल जीवित था, वह दाऊद का शत्रु बना रहा।he grew even more afraid of David. So from then on Saul was David’s enemy.

30पलिश्ती सेनाएँ बार- बार इस्राएलियों से युद्ध करने आईं, और जब- जब युद्ध हुआ तब- तब दाऊद और उसके सैनिक शाऊल के अन्य सेनापतियों में से अधिक सफल रहे थे। परिणामस्वरूप, दाऊद बहुत प्रसिद्ध हो गया।Every time the Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
