Persecution Foretold (Acts 23:12–22)
WBS These things have I spoken to you, that ye should not be offended. BSB BSB: “I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
WBS They shall put you out of the synagogues: yes, the time cometh, that whoever killeth you, will think that he doeth God service. BSB BSB: They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
WBS And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. BSB BSB: They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
WBS But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not to you at the beginning, because I was with you. BSB BSB: But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15–26)
WBS But now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? BSB BSB: Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
WBS But because I have said these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. BSB BSB: Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
WBS And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: BSB BSB: And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
WBS Of sin, because they believe not on me; BSB BSB: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
WBS Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; BSB BSB: in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
WBS Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. BSB BSB: and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
WBS I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. BSB BSB: I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it.
WBS He will glorify me: for he will receive of mine, and will show it to you. BSB BSB: He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.
WBS All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore I said, that he will take of mine, and show it to you. BSB BSB: Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.
WBS A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. BSB BSB: In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me.”
Grief Will Turn to Joy 17 WBS Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? BSB BSB: Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
WBS They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. BSB BSB: They kept asking, “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? We do not understand what He is saying.”
WBS Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said to them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that which I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? BSB BSB: Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus said to them, “Are you asking one another why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’?
WBS Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice: and ye will be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
WBS A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. BSB BSB: A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
WBS And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. BSB BSB: So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
Ask in My Name (Matthew 18:19–20)
WBS And in that day ye will ask me nothing: Verily, verily, I say to you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. BSB BSB: In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
WBS Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. BSB BSB: Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
WBS These things have I spoken to you in proverbs: but the time cometh when I shall no more speak to you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly concerning the Father. BSB BSB: I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
WBS At that day ye will ask in my name: and I say not to you, that I will pray the Father for you: BSB BSB: In that day you will ask in My name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
WBS For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came from God. BSB BSB: For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.
WBS I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. BSB BSB: I came from the Father and entered the world. In turn, I will leave the world and go to the Father.”
WBS His disciples said to him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. BSB BSB: His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
WBS Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest from God. BSB BSB: Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Because of this, we believe that You came from God.”
WBS Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? BSB BSB: “Do you finally believe?” Jesus replied.
WBS Behold, the hour cometh, and is even now come, that ye shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. BSB BSB: “Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
WBS These things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye will have tribulation, but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world. BSB BSB: I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”
